"That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed When the gales of November came early"
I've always been rather fascinated by this tale of shipwreck, famously immortalized by Gordon Lightfoot. The haunting lyrics in his ballad fairly accurately tell the tale of the Edmund Fitzgerald, whose final voyage ended in disaster forty years ago today. The Fateful Journey
"And every man knew, as the captain did too 'Twas the witch of November come stealin' " Love or hate the song, it has some wonderfully descriptive turns of phrase for the weather: The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead When the skies of November turn gloomy
The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
'Twas the witch of November come stealin'
When the gales of November came slashin' When afternoon came it was freezing rain In the face of a hurricane west wind
Does anyone know where the love of God goes When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings In the rooms of her ice-water mansion
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know With the gales of November remembered

Statistician extraordinaire Nate Silver at the FiveThirtyEight Science blog went looking for the US cities with the most unpredictable weather. This is not a metric of "good" weather, but of it's predictability.
They looked at 120 American cities (one representative from each of the 120 National Weather Service forecast offices across the 50 states) calculating 10 weather statistics rather than just high temperatures, then combined the statistics into an overall measure of weather unpredictability for each city.
The Upper Midwest was the most unpredictable, with Rapid City, SD: "The ICAO code for Rapid City Regional Airport is KRAP. That’s also a good description of Rapid City’s weather."

Unlike the non-arrogance of people who are not experts, have very little training in the field, are not practicing scientists, believing they have figured out something that 98% of the world's climatologists have somehow failed to see, despite having no peer-reviewed research, no independent credible research...nothing. Got it.

Web, I agree with you. I see no reason why religion and evolution can't coexist. Closed-minded people on both sides shout loudest, though, and often reduce meaningful discussion to name-calling. Actually, it's a pretty small, vocal minority who insist upon teaching religion in the science classroom.

Webster the word significant is so ambiguous it doesn't even belong in science. That's from the opinion papers it isI not scientifically proven Again, using measurable data, observation and accepted scientific theory, it is. You are free to reject it, but that doesn't change the fact. Although, I wish dschreib would not have shifted the focus of this thread to Climate Change, I understand his point (and actually had the same thought).

It's pointless to discuss/debate scientific theory with people who use the bible as a science book; that's arguing faith v. science and it's just an exercise in futility.
There is a small minority who find the fact of evolution to be hostile towards their religious beliefs. Unfortunate, but just because they don't believe it/can't accept it, doesn't mean it's not true. Most people who consider themselves religious accept evolution. To argue against a point of evolution - any point - by saying "the bible says..." should be end of discussion as there is no hope of having a meaningful scientific discussion. It's beyond astonishing that we're having this conversation in 21st Century America.

When it comes to climate change find me the theory that is close to being accepted as fact. There is none. Evolution had been put through the wringer of time and there's not a scientist on this earth to does not say it has been proven. Still more is being found out about it but the theory has stood the test of science. Accepted as scientific fact by climatologists: 1) The earth is warming 2) Humans significantly contribute

Again, there is need to understand that "scientific theory" is not guessing or speculating - it has a real meaning and it based on measurable data, observation, etc. To say it's "just a theory" is to completely misunderstand what scientific theory is.

The views your posted are not very controversial to the majority of people - most people who consider themselves "religious" (Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, etc) believe that evolution by natural selection is completely compatible with their faith. It's only a very small, very vocal, minority who insist that their creation "beliefs" should be taught alongside as an equal alternate theory to scientific theory. The bible is not a science book.

I think you may be mistaking "scientific theory" with "guessing" or "speculating". I think it's understanding what the term means. Scientific theory is a well-substantiated, well-supported, well-documented explanation for observations. The theory of evolution by natural selection is the best explanation for the fact of evolution. So, when people dismiss evolution by natural selection as "just a theory", they seem to believe it's a "best guess" or a "hunch". It's not.

I think there is a mistaken notion by some that to believe in science and in the fact of evolution is somehow incompatible with being "religious". Indeed, a majority of people who self-identify as religious also believe man evolved. It's only in white evangelical Protestants (27%) and by a much narrower margin, in black Protestants (44%)that a minority believe in evolution. Most belief systems - Buddhist, Jews, Catholics, Episcopalians, Mormans, many Muslims (although theologically conservative Muslims who ascribe to literal interpretations of the Koran generally denounce the evolutionary argument for natural selection, just as evangelical protestants do) accept that the theory of evolution is not incompatible with their faith. The problem becomes, as someone stated earlier, in this very tiny vocal minority demanding that their unscientific beliefs be presented as a counter argument to the science of evolution in public schools.

Ha ha...yes, exactly. A Fox station in Oklahoma cut out a section on evolution from last week's Cosmo's (they claimed "accident")...wonder if they cut the whole hour this week. Great show. For some reason I thought it was on Monday nights. I missed it. Can someone post the link to it like they did last weeks pilot episode? Thank you. It's on the NatGeo channel, PBS, and elsewhere, but here is the online link I found: full episodes of Cosmos

Millions did not watch Cosmos tonight because the E word was featured. Neil deGrasse Tyson was also audacious enough to inform folks that Evolution was not mearly an opinion. In fact. he informed them it wasn't even in the theory realm anymore. It is scientific fact. Just like gravity. I have known that for a long time, but I bet many did not. I get a kick out of folks saying "well, it's only a theory". Then rattling on about how theories are dis-proven all the time. This one stood the test of time and investigation. Evolution is a fact of science and life. Ha ha...yes, exactly. A Fox station in Oklahoma cut out a section on evolution from last week's Cosmo's (they claimed "accident")...wonder if they cut the whole hour this week. Great show.

I no longer have the ability to edit my posts...any ideas why this would suddenly disappear? I've got to the Edit Profile & Settings page->Settings->Posting Default and tried switching between Preview and BBCode button but it makes no difference. No "edit" button in the upper right hand corner. Same on all mobile devices and desktop. Idea? Are you still having this problem? The edit button is disabled after about 30 minutes or so on a particular post, but on fresh posts it should be there. It comes and goes (on all devices). One was right after I posted something and noticed a typo.

And yet it wasn't like the winters of the 70s. You cannot accept what it not given to you. Well, I guess you can, but technically, that's stealing. Webster, wait til they go looking for the magic matching analog. It sure isn't gonna fit anything from the 80s, 90s, or 00s. But that still doesn't make it like the 70s. You of course are free to say this winter reminds you of whatever year you wish...but the data does not support a true analog.
