Skies around these parts don’t look stable to me. They have that look of the “well. Something’s cooking”. There’s some big towering cumulus around here. A very unstable look for sure

A very unstable look for sure Yes, the air has that 'feel' to it in Crestwood. I'm helping a friend move to their new home today up near the airport. Hoping the storms stay south for them...and south of my home too.

DISCUSSION...Downstream of widespread convection across AR into south-central MO, more isolated thunderstorms have recently formed along a nearly stationary front draped generally east-west across central IL into western and central IN. In the wake of thunderstorms earlier today, the airmass across this area has been able to destabilize along/south of this boundary. As temperatures have warmed into the lower to mid 80s, moderate to strong instability has developed, with MLCAPE of 1500-3000 J/kg estimated from mesoanalysis. Although low-level flow remains generally weak, strong mid/upper-level winds are supporting 45-55 kt of effective bulk shear. There is some concern that an isolated large hail and strong/damaging wind threat may develop with these thunderstorms as they move generally east-northeastward. Additional convection that is developing across southern MO may also pose an isolated severe threat over the next couple of hours as it moves eastward. It remains unclear whether any portion of these regions will need a Severe Thunderstorm Watch due to nebulous large-scale forcing for ascent and related concerns about convective coverage, but radar trends will be closely monitored.

Linwood, KS tornado last night rated EF-4. Nearly a 32 mile path and a mile wide at it's largest.

Just a side note. Be careful with snakes. A classmate of mine since kindergarten...her husband died of a snake bite over memorial day in alabama. He stepped out to his patio and was bitten by a copperhead. Within minutes he was unconscious. Marilou had posted updates on her facebook reports for a day or two afterwards, none of which were all that encouraging, and he succumbed after 2 or 3 days. He never regained consciousness. This was a copperhead and he might have had some kind of alkergic reaction. From what i understand they tried to airlift him but he wasnt stable enough. Life is random and precious.

Never know. You really dont hear of too many snake bite deaths these days. Growing up, our dads worked together at semo as math and computer science professors.

And especially with all this flooding, wildlife is being displaced (and confused/panicked).

Yup... an enhanced risk bust. Not nearly enough shear to support updrafts... they go up and collapse. Just no sustained convergence to keep them going...not enough shear to keep them from killing themselves.

I agree that was borderline severe. I did get some impressive gusts, sheeting rain, and a smattering of hail that was definitely bigger than salt during the heaviest rain. Power wavered three times. I’m near a switching station so odds low that it would go out but it looked like it could. Had multiple lightning strikes nearby, with one almost directly over head. .89 in

yeah, the immediate metro is definitely getting hammered, severe or not. I'm past being bummed out about this constant crap.

Looking at what's been over the city for the last hour from the northwest edge it sure looked nasty enough. But in the end it was just a garden variety strong thunderstorm

These high CAPE, low shear days are always tough to forecast. Hard to get any organized severe weather with with virtually no low level shear
