NBA has suspended their season after Rudy Gobert (Utah Jazz) tests positive for covid. Intense irony after he mocked it on Monday

This is strange because it sounds like “everyone” is getting this. Then you see it’s only 1200 people.

This is strange because it sounds like “everyone” is getting this. Then you see it’s only 1200 people. They haven’t tested many people. Lots of people have a very minor case and act as carriers. Biggest issue is if lack of slack capacity in hospitals leads to the small % with severe symptoms not being cared for properly

This is strange because it sounds like “everyone” is getting this. Then you see it’s only 1200 people. Guaranteed way way way more than 1200 people have it. Our testing is way way behind..literally the worst in the world. You have to test to be sure people have it. As testing (hopefully) increases, the number of cases will exponentially increase. It will seem like it's getting much worse...the irony is..it is already, lol.

There also isn't a widespread specific test. I'm pretty sure our hospital system is using a respiratory virus panel to try to detect these, or we send them on to the state to test. I think some places may be going off of symptoms with a negative flu test. We now have to set up all flu tests/strep screens/rsv tests under our bio hood.

I've been reading in the news that although we have plenty of working SARS-Cov2 test kits now they depend on a separate RNA isolation kit that is in short supply...for obvious reasons. Is that correct?

Current protocol within my organization for known exposure is a 14 day self quarantine. I’ll take the risk for 14 days off.
Edit: I feel for hourly employees though. I’m all about self sustainment, but something needs done for those individuals.

perhaps what has been going around IS covid-19. Dont think that has not crossed my mind. I never tested positive for flu... but docs presumed it was flu based on symptoms. Flu tests are not flawless either.

Flu tests are not flawless either. Sounds like we potentially had the same virus. I tested negative as well. Luckily my doctor took the “walks like a duck, talks like a duck, acts like a duck, it’s a duck approach” and treated me for flu.

Current protocol within my organization for known exposure is a 14 day self quarantine. I’ll take the risk for 14 days off. Congress needs to protect all workers and make it a matter of law that companies MUST provide 14 days of paid leave for quarantine/corona virus. This should not have to come out of the pockets of workers. To do so will only further drag the economy down because people will be unable to take trips because they wont be able to afford them.

There was also some chatter of having to work-from-home at my station... would be make for one heck of an interesting weather hit.

Biggest issue is if lack of slack capacity in hospitals leads to the small % with severe symptoms not being cared for properly This is why universities must close. There is not a school on the planet that has the capacity to care for a school full of sick kids...even if it isnt much more than a mild cold for many of them. For some, it will be much more and that is a risk they cannot take. I know if my son gets sick... I want him here with us... not stuck in his dorm room.

00z nam smacks STL north with a period of heavy snow Saturday.
Probably time to actually consider that solution

Agreed. This has potential as well to completely reshape teleworking, public education, and a large majority of the economy. I should get my advisor to look into homeschooling companies...

It also has some support from the other models including the 18z euro. Nam is by far the most aggressive in terms of magnitude and southern placement. Regardless, I think you are in a good spot the see several hours of moderate to heavy snowfall

Nashville Public Schools closed tomorrow and Friday. Nothing like peeing on a forest fire. It sounds crazy, but the only way to avoid spreading this is a 100% two week shutdown of all movement and interaction of people. Literally every human being staying home and not interacting with anyone else physically.

I saw that one of the Universities ran a computer generated scenario of the virus and it's spread. They conservatively estimate 10 to 15 thousand cases of it in the US right now. Much higher than the numbers they are showing. They are waiting for other Universities to verify that finding. On a similar note, I saw that they think the virus had been in the US for at least 6 weeks before it was identified. I just read that 80% of the healthy population will have mild symptoms, and could act as carriers.

Although, I have to wonder in this age of instant information and, in turn, misinformation, how it has set the tone for current events.
