Appears some 700mb frontogenesis may be contributing to enhanced snow rates and mesoscale banding down south.

The good stuff will stay just to my south all day. Pretty much my take away from that update. Salt shaker all day while I get to read about death bands in Illinois.

I think radar can be a bit deceiving in these events. The wife just said it's pouring snow with 1/4 mi visibility, but the heavier radar returns are both north and south of our house.

Attempted leaving home and take 44 and let me tell You- I turned around and came back home. Mind blown how bad they have gotten with being covered and 44 is basically down to 1 passable lane that is still snow packed. I can’t even imagine what the roads will be like later but my thanks go out to all the street crews and private contractors- stay safe and I’ll be listening to you and staying home!

Death band forming on the IL side I'm checking with a buddy in Freeburg. You'd think it would be puking snow right now.

St. Clair/Randolph/Clinton Co. is looking like ground zero for 12"+ amounts. That Fgen band is parking itself down that way.

Its because those bands have snow echos reaching 14-18,000 feet. But the time it reaches the ground it could have been blown miles from where the radar beam bisected it.

Not surprised. Travel is going to be nearly impossible today. The wind has really picked up the last 30mins or so here.

Looks like descent in front of the death band that had formed is causing the snow just north of it to weaken.
It may not be that process.
But that kind of crazy lift also sees strong decent which dries out moisture

I am fortunate to be in a spot to see 12" today. I understand that it can feel disappointing to be outside of the heaviest Snow. Obviously areas just West of the river will be just outside these 30-35DBZ embedded bands. That's why the models drop down to 8-10" inches over metro West. But that doesn't mean there won't heavy snow. It's coming I think we would all be ecstatic in the West with 6-8 After 8-10, I stop caring so all good lol
