Forecast of near 70 New Year's Day on the GFS looks like it's giving us the middle finger and saying no cold air just yet. I think that's only out to hr 216 or so. Pretty sure it's going to get cold after that.🤪🤪🤪🤪

Usually with such cold air coming down out of Canada, for us to get a 5100 thickness line over st. Louis usually takes more than a 1024 high pressure system doesn't it?

Well Folks we are officially the new Florida!
All seriousness enjoy the warm weather and be thankful for your family.
I am definately getting used to the warm Christmas as I think this is at least now 3 in a row where it is shorts weather or close to it on Christmas Day.

Wow, the Euro looks warmish thru New Year's Day. Hopefully we can stick by the 'models can't handle shallow cold air very well' for another 4-5 days. So considering how close we are to either a record daily temp or monthly average record, the fact that the current records were set during 2 very strong El Nino's and we are in a second year of a modest La Nina what possible 'other' teleconnections can we trace back to 1877 and 1889? This apparently really proves the point that every El Nino or La Nina are not the same.

Agreed this pattern almost makes you want to just throw el nino and la nina out the window because they seem to have minimal affect in our area as our area seems to have a mind of its own lol.

We have seen 4 70+ days this December... second most on record since 1874! Of the two more recent entries in the top 5 for which we have mapping available... 1998 and 2012... I did a composite of the following Jan-Feb's and it is not a pretty picture if you want cold weather. It shows a strong signal for much above normal temps east of the Rocky Mountains and limited hope for much snow. The worm turns a little in March... it looks like a cold pocket developes over the Ohio Valley... likely the result of slow moving early spring cut-offs.

Off Topic: If your heading to the grocery store be sure to pack some extra patience and time as 'it's as busy as it gets' according to Google's Live Busyness meter. and then some at every Schnucks location at least in the metro-east and I assume elsewhere and other stores. Look for checkouts wrapping around the store and aisles packed with people.

Just our luck it will be warm all winter and the cold will finally arrive here in early spring. That seems to be a pattern lately.

Maybe bellevillewxguys prediction of a 2012 like winter won't be that far off haha. It's too early to know of course, but this upcoming "pattern change" just keeps being pushed back.

Mr. Higgins has made his thoughts known today...unfortunately it confirms what many of us have thought. Maybe we will get surprised, and have a good Jan/Feb but things aren’t looking great right now.

lol, what happened to Beaker's post? The one from a couple hours ago where he expected 2 inches of snow this winter and didn't post it earlier because he thought people would get upset.

I'm remembering a warm Christmas in 1982 - the year I bought my first house. I looked it up on the NWS site and there was only a trace of snow during that December as well as numerous warm days and a record high or two set.
I was afraid to look at what January and February 1983 looked like.
Merry Christmas to the MTW members. I hope it's a safe and joyous one for all of you!
