Temps 35° looking forward to our snow on grass and treeswith slushy streets later today and this evening. Schools looking like they wasted a snow day. Drove to work with ease. On the way to work I saw that Kirkwood had school. And the best thing is I saw this guy that looked like Mick from Rocky running this morning. He looked to be in his 80s. This is the telling story for all these schools that that took a day off. This is coming from an educators point of view. The ones that make the call to have school or not, have hundreds, if not thousands of lives in their hands. Also, they usually have to be at school or take a vacation day. Same with custodial, maintenance, etc. It is not a decision that is taken lightly. Besides the roads that have to cleared, there are parking lots, sidewalks and other areas that the schools have to clear. Long story short, this is not a place to bash educational leaders who have many sleepless nights wondering what Mother Nature has in store. HS principal weighing in: Cancellations are a nightmare for educators, but the bottom line is we have to error on the side of caution. Rural community or not, teenagers in our state have minimal experience driving in hazardous conditions and few opportunities to develop the skill. Heck, I’ll argue that most adults under the age of 30 have little experience driving on ice or snow. Additionally, in our particular district, we have roads that are impassible with the slightest hint of ice or snow. Our busses are not equipped for travel on anything but pavement. It’s not worth the risk in most cases. We are literally responsible for the well being of hundreds if not thousands of children’s lives.

“Better days in May”. That’s the rule of thumb for many administrators. This is something you just don’t risk. TiLawn absolutely hit the nail on the head. Hmmmmm....where have I heard that before?

I'm so sorry, Chris. We lost our 18 year old border collie in December, and even though she had a wonderful life with us, it was unbelievably painful to let her go. Prayers sent your way.

If we are going to talk about MODOT and their shortfalls.....then we should probably talk about Missouri drivers and their issues with lack of experience driving in the snow. I was telling my husband that many, many current drivers had never had the opportunity to drive in snow of any significant accumulation. Our son is just shy of 21, and he had never driven in snow like this.
