At the request of several members I have opened up a thread for people who are interested to discuss the Westlake Landfill concerns. I have been asked for my opinion and at this point I think it is not appropriate for me to share my opinion since I am a member of the media...and although unlikely...I may be called on to report on this story. What I can say is that there are two significantly different opinions of what could happen if the fire reaches the nuclear waste...and two very different opinions on whether the fire might ever reach the nuclear waste in the first place.
That being said... it is a topic worthy of discussion by those who are interested. HOWEVER....I must caution folks to be very careful about what they post and to whom they attribute it. There is the very real concern you could get yourself into trouble for libel/defamation, etc. if somebody is not quoted or attributed properly...so please be careful!

I really appreciate it Chris, I think this is totally appropriate for a discussion on this board. I am very interested to see what others have to say.
I think the main reason I am so concerned about this is the fact that I live in the zone that could be effected. When this was first brought to the publics attention I believe it was said that it would only effect the local area (i.e. Bridgeton, Maryland Heights etc.) But now it has been said that it could spread to about a 15 mile radius. Well that is a huge area!! Plus radiation can and will get into the air, water and soil etc. And last a long long time!!!
Supposedly the fire is only about 1200 ft from the Nuclear waste. And supposedly Republic or whomever can't stop it. Also that it should burn out before it reaches it. I'm sorry but this is some serious life threatening stuff here. My family is worried that we will have to leave our home in a hurry and possibly never return if a nuclear fallout is to happen. There is so much I could say, but wanted to other points of view.

Worst case scenario, Whats going to determine where the "fallout" heads if the smoldering reaches the waste? Have they placed a possible time line?

Originally they had a timeline of 3-6 months. And according to the lady that was doing most of the talking at the meeting in Bridgeton last week said we were already a few months in. So not sure what to believe.

Here is a good article from St. Louis Public Radio that was published on October 21st. To sum up the article. - There is no consensus on whether radioactive materials have already contaminated areas outside the landfill.
- There is no consensus on how much radioactive materials even exists.
- There is no consensus on how close the fire is to the radioactive waste.
- There is no consensus on whether the fire is moving toward or away from the radioactive waste.
- There is no consensus on whether the fire will even reach the radioactive waste assuming it is moving towards it.
- There is no consensus on whether this even poses a danger.
- There is no consensus on a long term plan for how to handle the radioactive materials.
No wonder people are confused.
