This is a very brief list of instructions for installing Bufkit and configuring it to work with KSTL.
1. Download the latest version of Bufkit here.
2. Unzip the file and run setup.exe.
3. Create a folder structure in your Documents folder like the following. This will make more sense when you enter these folder names in the setup dialog box. The reason it works better to store these in your user profile folder is because you have write access to this part of the harddrive. You probably won't have write access to the C:\Program Files (x86) folder.
bufkit
bufkit\archive
bufkit\current
bufkit\exported
bufkit\snapshots
4. Run Bufkit.
5. Click the Set Up button in the upper right. A dialog box will open. Enter the following settings and make sure it looks like the image below.
Note: Replace <username> with your Windows profile name below.
a. Directory that contains Bufkit profiles = <C:\Users\<username>\Documents\bufkit\current\>
b. Directory that contains Bufkit archive profiles = <C:\Users\<username>\Documents\bufkit\archive\>
c. Directory to save screen captured snapshots = <C:\Users\<username>\Documents\bufkit\snapshots\>
d. Directory to save exported profiles = <C:\Users\<username>\Documents\bufkit\exported\>
e. Model Types = nam, nam4km, gfs3, rap, hrrr
f. Site Ids = KSTL
6. Click the Get Data button and paste the following profile right over the top of what is already there in the black section. Then click the red A button to save the changes. Make sure it looks like the image below.

Notes:
- You need to click the Get Data button and then click Get Profiles to download all of the files.
- You can click on the Archive button while in Bufkit to select any data file that has been previously downloaded.
- All cycles are available on the RAP and HRRR. I just usually setup my data profiles download every 3rd one. It should be pretty obvious how to include them all if you really want them.
- If you have problems running bufkit then the configuration may be corrupt. You can reset everything by deleting the folder <C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\BUFKIT>.
Data Sources:
- I usually use the PSU realtime bufkit distribution. For an inventory of available sounding sites go here.
- COD has a more limited distribution here.
- IEM has a huge archive of bufkit files going back to about 2006 here. Just navigate through the folders and look for the bufkit folder for the date and time of interest.
