What I am now hearing is that MDOT could not lay salt down due to this starting as rain. Once the snow, ice and flash freeze hit it was over... That’s their excuse every time. Didn’t it rain in IL as well? I will say - the rain switched pretty damn quickly to sleet then snow, so not a lot that can be done...at the moment. But c’mon. While IL has its own set of issues, they know how to keep roads clear. It seems that every storm we face, there is some of problem. Some worse than others. I’m not sure what’s going on at MODOT, but I feel badly for the people driving the trucks because it’s not them making the decisions.

We have now tied the record low for this morning at 12° The rate of fall suggests we are likely to break the record in the next hour. Just amazing!

The fact that yesterday was a bit of an over achiever hopefully means good things for us as we head into the winter. What an impressive airmass for so early.

Thanks for unlocking!. Glad to be home after starting in Rome with flooded highways and ending in Belleville with ice and snow. Been following you all and appreciating your updates as we dealt with lots and lots of rain in Italy.

And from the sounds of it, Missouri highways aren't much better than they were last night.
Hope this isn't a precursor for how things are going to go all winter.

So Glenn is doing a Winter forecast on the 20th and hinted this winter could be similar to last winter with the November snow occurring like last year. Interesting. I just hope we don’t have to wait long for our first snow in December. I am a true snow junky.

I had 9F in Perryville on the backyard thermometer, supported by the same reading on my truck. Impressive for the middle of winter, and incredible for this time of year.
That was a lot of fun...now let's get things to reload so we can have lots more Dec-Feb.

I'm one of those people that got in an accident. Currently have a cracked L3 and L4 vertebrae, hairline fracture in my clavicle and bruised lungs. Cops say I'd be dead if it wasn't for the seatbelt.
WEAR YOUR DAMN SEATBELTS! THEY WILL SAVE YOU!

Made it to work from St Clair to Hillsboro. Only issue was Hwy 30. Pretty sad the back roads (county) were in better shape. Really wasn’t that bad though.

9 degrees for the low just SW of Desoto. Earliest snow days these past two years in my 15 years of being in education. Absolutely impressive!

I love how so many people are bitching and complaining about MODOT and how slick the roads were after sunset last night. 99.9% of people have no idea how to handle a winter storm and how to “attack” Mother Nature at her worst much less how to drive in it. You can go into a storm system like yesterday and have a plan of treatment etc but sometimes that plan will change 3, 4, maybe 5+ times even on a smaller system like this. The roadways were in bad shape and it wasn’t all MODOTs fault. First of all sleet was the first game changer, precipitation continued until sunset or after, as the day went on and temps dropped the snow became much more powdery, wind picked up even more after sunset and was blowing the snow across the roads and as it hit the wet roads it melted and froze almost instantly. When conditions like this change so quickly there is no way that they will keep up with it. When MODOT trucks are stuck in the same traffic jams they can’t do their job either. If motorists would take some responsibility and learn how to drive in winter weather everything would be better for all. I’ve been doing snow removal for 25 years and believe me I have seen it all trust me.......people don’t know how to drive and only care about their circle around their car. So in closing SLOW DOWN and quit blaming others for your bad driving skills.

WEAR YOUR DAMN SEATBELTS! THEY WILL SAVE YOU! Glad to hear you were wearing your seatbelt and are still with us! Best of luck getting back at it. Ps best advice ever. A state trooper has told me countless stories people being ejected from their cars and then end up getting ran over by their own car they just got ejected from because they weren’t wearing seat belts. This time of the year that’s almost as important as just slowing down.

Having lived in St. Louis and now up north the difference in snow removal is night and day.
Probably a lot more resources put into it up here, but still.

Wow! Two record lows in one night! That can’t happen that often. Also interesting that for both yesterday and today we broke the record lows which were both set in 1911. Might have been a similar setup 118 years ago.
