Our snow piles are hanging on for Christmas! It’s almost as if God knew we needed a bit of white on Christmas Eve! Hope all of my Cornerites have a lovely Christmas no matter what you do, who you’re with, where you go and how you spend it! Hugs from Festus!

I see 1992 was in there and iirc, feb 1993 was snowy with back to back 8+ inch snows. In that year, those 2 storms came within weeks of each other. It was not a snow on snow though bc we had alot of warm rainy wx in between. Thsts the type of winter i envisioned for this year...an early onset followed by a warm period, then a wintry close...a bookend winter. Thats why in previous posts i suggested that we may not see a good next snow until late feb. No science behind it...just matches well with some of the years i modeled my theory on.

Should feel and look more like winter around the 30th as we get into the cyclonic flow.
Probably have to wait longer for any sustained winter though unfortunately.

Another large sunspot has formed on the sun's northern hemisphere each core is larger than the Earth in size, Lots of new disturbed areas have also formed which could soon turn into full fledged spots all of which are from the new solar cycle 25. Solar Minimum is now ending and the road to the new Maximum has begun which could come in a few years.

Snow on shady, north-facing slopes is hanging on for dear life today.

Snow on shady, north-facing slopes is hanging on for dear life today. My neighbors north facing yard still has 2-3” of compacted slush on it. It just refuses to melt

I still have snow on my east facing roof. There is still 2 snowmen hanging on in the front yard. Several tall oaks keep them shaded. Close to 3" on the top of my pond dam when I gave the granddaughters rides on the 4 wheeler. Again, this has numerous trees to the east and west that keeps it shaded. Still getting used to the sun angles through the spring summer fall winter. Amazing the difference in winter vs summer.

Snow on shady, north-facing slopes is hanging on for dear life today. On my culdesac, my neighbors across the culdesac can legitimately say they will have a white Christmas as they will have 1 inch still on the ground at 6 am. My snow has been gone a while.

Solar Minimum is now ending and the road to the new Maximum has begun which could come in a few years. Been a long time coming. My understanding is that the maxima is expected to be weak. We are probably in a long term minimum and I think we've seen an uptick in volcanic activity (or it's just in the news more)....I was hoping for something that rivaled the Dalton Minimum (my namesake). Remains questionable what effect such long term cycles have on weather - probably some subtle impact on climate, but it's tough to see with so many temperature readings being captured on micro-climate impacted cities.
Now to make this a truly weather related post - well, I got nothing. I admit. I'll take this over 40s though. there. lol

I've been trying to better understand solar cycles for a couple of years now. Forecasting the cycles is still very much in its infancy. It is very difficult to add skill above and beyond the trivial persistence and climatology techniques. Be very skeptical of claims regarding a grand solar minimum in the near future. Most are completely bunk. Be skeptical of claims from Zharkova who appears in the news frequently. Her publications are not well received by her peers. With that said cycle 25 forecasts tend to cluster around it behaving much like cycle 24. Solar cycles do affect the climate though the magnitude of the effect is relatively small compared to other forcing agents. And most importantly I found little if any correlation between solar cycles and seasonal snowfall in St. Louis.
