I just got home an hour ago from the Train Show in St. Charles Convention Center there on 70. We took 70 to 141 and stopped in Fenton to drop off some stuff and then got on 21 south to De Soto. Drizzle/light rain the whole way but the roads I was on were fine. At first, it took awhile for the heater/defroster to work which created a 'very small window' to see out of. Traffic was normal speed. Could certainly see problems for the morning.

Wreck on 64 may have included as many as 30 cars according to witnesses on the scene.

Back home... had to go to Kirkwood and back. Wasnt bad going... noticeably worse once we hit 64. We took the outer road because 64 is westbound is closed by a 12-20 car pileup (estimated) at Maryville Center. We only slipped once... in our subdivision. But anyone doing better than 30 mph is taking a big risk. The focus as been mostly northwest of 44 in MO and 70 in IL. But that will shift overnight steadily to the south... and precip rates will also increase somewhat. Glad you got home safely. Thanks, me too. It is very cold outside tonight

Roads are really bad around 70/270/364/40. I’ve been out for hours salting and until a little while ago, I didn’t see one MoDOT truck anywhere. They have done a terrible job, normally when I’m out doing snow removal I see tons of trucks. I saw one St. Louis county truck and several Maryland Heights trucks.

MODOT treated my subdivision earlier today. And the roads around the house were all treated. I wonder what happened on the interstates?

I’m like right outside of Sunset Hills. So I’m technically unincorporated Saint Louis County. I thought those yellow trucks were MODOT all these years. I’m thankful I’m still able to learn something new most days.

On an earlier conference call, MODOT did mention that the forecast they use called for a later onset in the metro and an earlier onset south of the metro. They brought in crews early south of metro however didn’t plan to have crews start til later, I believe 7, in the metro area. When precip started they had to go into scramble mode for a while to mobilize crews. I know we all have our opinions, however having some insight into their operation at times, I do believe they try to do the best they can do managing with available resources and crews and the vast area they are responsible for

1) Clayton must have known something was up as they were out doing streets around 1pm. 2) So is anything else coming for the metro area tonight or was that the extent of the moisture?

I’ll work under the assumption MODOT is under resourced currently.
Otherwise, I brought this up Friday afternoon and I’m a hobbyist.
This event was well advertised and modeled decently 48+ hours out.
It’s not like you have to get the road treated precisely 5 minutes before the ice starts.

They’ve mentioned numerous times they are way under resourced and have lost experienced people at a much higher rate.

Per their twitter, the County road department crews began salting at 3pm although they were anticipating 8pm-4am for the precip.

On top of probably less than perfect deployment of the finite resources currently available.

Been on the private side of operations and making the pre treatment calls and it’s never easy. It was eye opening how costly making a wrong call one way or even waiting to long to make a call the cost could be and that was a 3 acre, 4 building campus. I don’t miss having to make those calls one bit.

Just walked out there again and it’s ice covered. Crazy how fast a persistent freezing drizzle can make things treacherous.
