We don't have winter here anymore. We have short intervals of cold with even shorter intervals of snow in a vast land of non winter.

What gets me about this winter season so far is usually someone is getting some decent snow even if we haven't seen a flake even in el nino/mild patterns. I remember those few years where TX, AR, and OK and along the gulf coast saw snow before we did. Many years the east coast and of course the upper midwest saw quite a bit of snow even if here in the lower midwest did not. So far this year no one and I mean no one has seen squat really overall minus that one small event just to our N a few weeks back.

Quick math says we’ve had 7 years since 2000 that have been in the top 40 snowiest years. And 8 years since 2000 that have been in the top 40 least snowiest. From 1980 to 2000 we had 6 in the top 40 for snowiest. And likewise, 3 in top 40 for least. Not sure what to do with that other than I was curious lol

Overall yes it’s been warmer for longer stretches, but in the grand scheme of things it’s not all that unusual for this part of the country. Our memories are short, especially when it’s 60 degrees on Christmas weekend. We’ve had some very impressive events the last 20 years, and not just a few of them. Just look at the data for the last 120 years. Lots of winters in there where a person could easily say “it doesn’t snow around here anymore.”

Does it look more likely we will see flakes flying in the middle of the next week? At least have a winter feel and look?

00z nam is bullish on flakes Wednesday morning.
Could be some squall/convective bursts.
Has that bubbly look to it

Merry Christmas Chris and everyone on the blog, With nothing 'white' to track the next 48-60 hours, I will maybe only pop in and read to see if any 'classic' posts have been added. Stay safe everyone.

With how depressing and boring the weather has been so far, I will gladly welcome mood flakes flying and feeling more cold like winter should.

Trends are positive this morning for snow Wednesday night/Thursday morning.
Might even have a chance to get some grass covered briefly.

Good Christmas Eve morning to MTW! It is going to be wet and mild... we all know that.
So let's skip ahead and I am modestly interested in the very deep upper low over central CONUS late Tuesday into Wed... and possibly Thu. It wouldn't be a lot, but I could see enough snow shower activity to coat the ground... and at the very least some nice bursts of mood snow. Until then, enjoy the holiday and be safe!

Models are trending towards a deeper/more coherent stacked low moving overhead Wed...some actually develop a small deformation zone with that. I agree with Chris...there may be some potential for more than "mood flakes" if trends continue.
Merry Christmas!

GOES East shows some clearing from just east of Columbia, MO to the central Mississippi Valley thru south central Illinois. A better chance for some areas to reach 65* + today! 70 is a stretch. It's one of those days in the winter where high temps could overachieve!

Merry Christmas Eve all. Stay safe and enjoy Friends and Family.
This truly is a wonderful season.
Only downfall was I had to legitimately turn the AC on last night so I could sleep lol. We had people over and 75 degrees in the house was too much.
It took 4 hours to cool the house from 75 to 65, usually I run the house 65 year round so we can sleep lol.
Just crazy, with no wind the windows did not cool the house with them open.
Im ready for at least a little snow.

Merry Christmas Eve, folks~ So stuffy in the kitchen, I turned on the downstairs A/C. 77 degrees inside, 65 outside. Just spoke with my sister who lives near Sault St Marie, ON. It's 4 degrees Celsius with fog. She lives near Goulais River, and said that apparently the bears 150-200 clicks north of her are acting weird. Some are down to hibernate, others have come out because they think that it's spring but they're not 'awake'. They're calling them zombie bears and to be alert because they're sluggish and confused. I told her that she was having a St Louis Christmas (minus the bears lol).
About midday I checked the weather in CA at my Mom's. East Bay, northern CA. I was sitting then at 63, she was at 47.
Hope that we at least can get precip and break the back of the drought. Looking for a pony...

A couple models like the RGEM/GEM showing some decent snowfall totals around the area with the stacked low pressure system. NAM was close to something sweet, but just a bit to far south and east.

GFS starting to jump onboard pass 2 runs as well with a dusting to spots of an inch or so. ICON says it's to warm and has just mainly rain.

It's one of those days in the winter where high temps could overachieve! 68 at KSTL, 67 at KSUS. Temps overachied more than the forecast this morning. The clearing really helped add that boost.
