Battle going on with cold...rain/sleet then bursts of snow/sleet and back again...must be right on the line with that warm wedge

Transitioned to rain about an hour ago. light rain that is. Just got back from helping some neighbors shovel their driveway. Being neighborly is great!

Heaviest snow weve seen of the storm. Just got .5 inches in 10-15 minutes.

I hate it when tweets get pushed out that are obsolete. That’s not what Twitter is for. Click on the link and it’s a 14 hour old article. Major networks do also.

.UPDATE... Issued at 1216 PM CST Sat Jan 12 2019
Winter storm continues to impact the region early this afternoon. Water vapor imagery is showing the back edge of the warm conveyor belt nearing the Mississippi River moving eastward. Warm advection precipitation should move off to the north and east by mid/late afternoon with more scattered activity upstream. Precipitation type will be tricky but general thought is that mostly snow will be along/northeast of I-44 in Missouri and I-55 in Illinois. Some sleet or snow pellets are also possible, particularly with more showery echoes.
The other thing to watch evolve over the next 6-9 hours will be the deformation zone upstream. Model guidance suggests that this area across western Missouri to weaken with time, but redevelop just after dusk across central portions of the CWA. In areas where this is snow, additional accumulations of 1-3 inches are possible as snowfall should accumulate more efficiently in the absence of daylight. After this area moves off to the east/southeast, cloud ice will be lost so freezing drizzle/drizzle will likely be the primary precipitation type. A light glaze of ice is possible with this freezing drizzle.
Only change to headlines was to cancel winter storm warning for far southern and eastern sections of the forecast area where temperatures are well above freezing and only rain is expected through this evening.

M 10.0 dardenne prairie at 10 am. Compaction has begun so it is unlikely i will add much to that total. 10 here as well - compaction sucks

Accumulating snow has set in again.
I just got in from plowing the driveway and I can tell you that the moisture content with this snow is VERY high. It piles up like a foot+. I'm going to call the storm total 8" considering compaction.

I don't want to hear anyone complain about their 8-10 inches being compacted. There's currently a steady rain falling on what's left of my 4 inches .

Rain here now. Plus it's melting off the trees. I love these snows, but I wish they would stick around for more than a day.

Has anyone noticed, the snow has a blue tint to it, or are my eyes playing tricks on me? I have been up since midnight, with 1-1/2 hrs sleep...lol

Has anyone noticed, the snow has a blue tint to it, or are my eyes playing tricks on me? I noticed the same thing to. It’s very cool looking. Probably from the very high water content

1:00 pm Snow depth: 10.0/ E 11.0 I took a measurement because I have been getting some bursts of moderate to heavy snow over the past several hours, and snow continues to fall. Compaction has taken its toll on me, so many parts of my yard may be under 10, especially on the south side. But I've been measuring on the north side, slightly sloped, so I'll say I still have 10, but I think what has actually accumulated over time has been an estimated 11 inches.

Southerners like their snow cream...saw recipes posted on facebook, and the usual urban legendary caution not to make it on the first snow of the season. Here's why I don't buy into that...first snow, 200th snow...whatever...all the little ice crystals had condensed/sublimated on a condensation nuclei...otherwise, there wouldn't be precip. Eat any snow icecream at your risk - the biggest risk is the raw egg, but there is an eggless recipe. Grew up eating it in the 70s and I'm still alive. We would scoop the snow about 8 inches below the top

HRRR 18Z thinks we might get an additional 2-5" later this evening as 850MB temps cool back. Looks like the metro-east down to Potosi, MO seems most likely to benefit.
