Steady snow and 32 in Wentzville, the grass is white already. I did not expect that Interesting. Looks like there may be a couple straggler bands moving through.

I'm of the (unpopular) opinion that once this lobe of the PV drops through next week, things will moderate significantly. Which would lead to a rather boring first half of Feb. We then get back into the mix with a couple chances toward the end of the month before calling it a winter. Again just my opinion/prediction.

The pattern has to relax...then gets back to it. My guess is that any slow down would not last too long.

Models always want to break down patterns too quickly in the extended...any moderation should be short lived with plenty of cold air running around. One or two of these airmasses could be extreme...there's been bubbles of -40*C 850 temps crossing Canada lately.

Got a couple of icy patches on the deck that didn't evaporate fast enough before they froze. Can see a few flakes of snow on top of the icy patches, but a precious few. Immeasureable - I could probably count them.

If it's not snowing it can go back in the fifties and sixties and stay there.
I've grown to despise this idea of killer cold.
It's dangerous enough when it's below freezing outside.
The other morning leaving the Enterprise Center after working on the changeover crew from the stage floor to the ice hockey rink there's always people sleeping outside on the sidewalks.
I'm sure that this takes place all over the city
I'm not arrogant enough to act like I'm any better than anyone else.
I don't care why that takes place or why anyone is interested that situation.
It's heartbreaking. I can't even imagine how awful that must be.
And I spent a couple years in that similar situation.
And I wasn't actually alone outside in the cold.
But there was nights it would get down in the 30s. And even that is really unimaginable.
So the brutal cold can kiss my ! BACKSIDE !.
It's bad enough I have to work in it today.

What's the point other than "Wow look the polar vortex is so close to us, how cool!" We've all seen it and it's not particularly enjoyable. Just causes physical and financial strain on everyone.

Heard Chris talking about Aqua Fox this morning... I wish they would bring it back. Always enjoyed watching those reports. Should have gotten a jet boat since our rivers aren’t very deep around here and maybe it wouldn’t have broke.

What i notice....when its in the 50s and 60s....ppl wish for cold. It gives them hope for snow. When its cold ppl wish for snow, but its relatively rare for cold and moisture to meet up at the same time. Hence, our avg annual snow is 18 inches or so. I too hate cold with no snow. But we got to put up with it to get snow eventually. This years pattern suggests that we can get snow on a departing artic airmass. I think overall february will give us shots at heavy snow and reinforcing cold.

Clearly thats been the trend especially on the euro. I think rt now, no impact from these clippers. Still cld see flurries or brief shot of light snow due to frontal forcing, but any change to an impactful system (and probably minor impact at that) is not going to be predictable beyond a day.

The 12z Icon remains unbelievably cold next week.
I wonder/hope it has a cold bias.
Also, how often does it snow with temps around or below zero? This hybrid clipper is running into an artic dome. It seems strange it wants to collide directly with it.

The airmass coming down early next week looks brutal...cross polar flow develops and breaks off a chunk of extremely cold air out of the arctic.

GFS isn't showing up for some reason on TT, but looking at it elsewhere it lines up with the ICON. That's scary cold for lots of people and would certainly make headlines. I really don't want that to take place, but we are getting into a more reasonable range now and they aren't backing off...YET.

I would like it to be low 30s for highs each day and upper teens at night with an impending southern plains storm system that moves in overnight after about 3 am and continues into the next day with temps in the upper 20s. Deformation sets in abt 4 pm and gives us a good shot of more snow followed by a few days of cold weather. Thats been a typical st louis storm in the past. Havent really seen that for a while.

The sad thing is, it can be cold and super cold and that does not guarantee anything. We were below freezing since Saturday morning, through noon on Tuesday. It warmed up for 15 hours and rained over 1.0” now we’re back to cold with no real storm or clipper in sight. The clipper train looked great 1-2 days ago and now looks like the central and northern Illinois special. Hopefully we cash in on something in the next week. I do agree the models do not handle clippers well. The last one did not even show up until 15 hours before the event Saturday night. Belleville and Friv are the kings at sniffing out a potential clipper in the short term!

From TT: Jan 23: NOAA data downloads are very slow today, resulting in model delays. I'm working to retrieve the data.

12z GFS has quite a few bouts of snow between now and Tuesday...I think we will have snowcover to set the stage for the arctic air next week.
