1985 was preceeded by sudden stratospheric warming (which resulted in vortex split) on December 31, 1984. And then we went through an epic snow drought that lasted into the 90s....

I'm still skeptical...will believe it if the models still show it Sunday. Hard for me to bet against the pattern but with that said I will be cutting some more firewood this weekend to prepare. I am cutting hedge tomorrow. Love the long burn time, critical with extreme cold. Nothing worse than going to sleep wondering if there will be any coals left when you wake!

I've got a nice stash of black locust to dig into...right now I'm burning some white oak that was from a 3'+ 5 year dead standing tree...marble hard wood and super heavy. It burns very nice.

Already down to 16*/5* with a wind chill of "too damn cold". Just had to take a 5 minute walk from my class to car. Can confirm, it’s miserable to be outside with the wind

The models keep trending North with these clippers.
The short term models are high and dry for tomorrow.
And the gfs and nam has started trending North with Saturdays.

Hedge as is hedge apple/Osage orange? Yes osage orange. I need to get out and cut more. Maybe this weekend. I'm burning some oak that's a couple years old but it burns so fast.

There are some signals starting to show up for a potential system developing at the base of the trough late next week. Icon and gem have it, and Gfs is hinting at it as well. Not much to speak of yet but could be something there as the dome of cold becomes more W-E oriented which would open the door for some southern energy again.

Might go for a stroll on Lake Michigan if its -30 out for a few days lol.
If I fall in the water will be 63 degrees warmer at least.

Ukmet is much weaker and further south with the hybrid clipper.
Would limit the warmup for STL, but not far enough south to bring the snow.
Interestingly, it has a strong southern low around Amarillo at day 6.
Might be something there.

Well, it did not take me long this morning to know that I am NOT biting on sub-zero cold yet. The Euro went from forecasting 15 for a high Thursday...to forecasting 53! Ummmm....that is not helpful. In fact, the Euro does not even go below 0 until...wait for it...day 7! It sure feels like it has slipped into a severely cold bias this winter in the 5 to 8 day range...only to retreat to less colder temperatures within the 2 to 5 day range.
I'm still going cold... but probably just the same numbers I carried yesterday...with us bottoming out near 0 Wednesday night.

I have 3 digital outdoor thermometers around my house, when I group them all together, they all sync at the same temps, but when I have them placed in different locations, they'll vary on temps from 2° to 6-8°? As of right now, 1 shows 8° another is 10° & yet the other is at 14°?? Weird.

Maybe at least thats a sign that it wont get as cold as some were saying(fingers crossed)
