No snow in Chicago or St. Louis, but a decent amount between us. Just got back from Starved Rock State Park and they had a couple inches. Made for a very scenic hike that I would highly recommend. Starved Rock is beautiful but most of the time, it’s packed. Good to see attendance down a bit so you can better enjoy the beauty.

I may have jacked the spelling, but it should be close enough for you to get it.

Essentially right next door to Starved Rock, much lesser known and therefore not as busy, and some say more beautiful than S.R.

Gfs has been fairly consistent with a pretty big storm mid month. Rain/snow or something in between could be possible somewhere in the Midwest.

Speaking of parks.. I’ve always wanted to go to Pickle Springs. Anyone been there? Read about it in an old Mo conservation magazine and it looked beautiful.

Some ideal radiational cooling going on tonight...already down in the mid-upper 20s! Though, winds will switch to the S after midnight so temps will plateau. This is the most excitement for me in terms of weather the last couple weeks haha. Our time will come after Jan 10-15 IMO though.

Brother and his wife retired to rural Farmington 3 years ago. Gorgeous area, as I’m sure toddatfarmington will attest.

Elephant rocks get all the glory, and is well deserved, however Pickle Springs is a hidden little gem if you enjoy a good hike.

Pickle springs is very nice indeed. We’ve got lots of beautiful areas down this way if you’re into that sort of thing.
Gfs is good for southerners fri/sat. Very close to being a real nice storm of that secondary development can happen. So very far away though.

When was the last time we had a long run (2weeks or more) of a -NAO during DJF? It seems like ages ago. Like years.

This may very well indeed end up being a 2014-15 type winter where everything is loaded up for February. I know it sucks a bit to have to wait that long, but I'd much rather take that over February of 2017. It was extremely gross that month/year.

What in the world? Michelle Madaras is in rural Edwardsville doing a live report and it looks like it snowed. Not just a dusting, either. Enough to cover the ground and the road. Did it snow significantly over there overnight?

I dont recall the specifics of 2015, but based on your description, that wld make this a bookend winter that ive been talking about. Of course thats not saying we wont have cold and snow before then but i think mild reestablishes itself more readily durin this middle part of the winter.

I’m thinking a late start to spring as well.

Yes, you have mentioned that a few times this winter beaker and one of the first ones to point it out back in the fall. The 2014/15 winter is pretty similar to this year so far with a cold November and mild December and January (so far for 2020 anyway) then a very potent February (2015). That's the winter that back on 2/16/15 brtn got buried and the south central half of the area got hosed with 1-2 in amounts. I'm almost positive dschreib has the map archived for that event as Marissa got screwed (par for the course!) Overall though, that was the month winter really came roaring in. I don't remember March being too impressive that year, but I could be wrong. I was thinking 2016/17 was a similar pattern too, but the more I remember it wasn't. That winter December was pretty cold and then January and especially February were off the charts warm. Let's hope to hell that's not our future for February.

I think this week we are high and dry. I feel like a drought pattern may begin to set up. The gfs is already starting to shift the rain south east on friday. And another few modelnruns i think it will.be just like this week very little if any rain or snow. Seems to.be a trend this pattern to shift things south east. Just my thoughts.

Closer to flooding than a drought

Hey now... according to some posters on FB, the Farmers Almanac is calling for a huge storm across Missouri that will drop 2 feet of snow in some locations. In addition to that temps will drop to -40 after it! 🤣😂 Supposed to be the last part of January. Sounds like a done deal to me!😃
