When I contemplated going to school for Meteorology, I placed two calls and left messages: One to Channel 4 and the other to Channel 5 (I wasn't hooked on channel 2 at that point.) I knew that Trish Brown attended Creighton, and that was a school I was looking into. She called the house, and I still recall my mom yelling, "Hey...Trish Brown is on the phone." And I was like, "Oh ok..cool." The look on her face along with my sisters was priceless. It was a good conversation, and it was delightful to talk to her about it. (She ended up calling a second time, forgetting that she called the first and I pretended that we hadn't already spoken. It didn't help that I had a huge crush on her.) Then Scott Connell called me back and it was hilarious...I still remember him saying, "It's entirely too much math and science and the pay isn't great, but if you like that, go for it!" I then picked up the curriculum guide from SLU, where I decided to attend, and immediatley delcared my major to be Business Administraiton with majors in International Business and MIS, minor in Spanish. He was right...the math and science would've been a beast...so I picked the 'easy' button.
Great story! I knew there was a lot of math (not my best subject), but plunged ahead and attended Parks College in Cahokia. Was very fortunate to learn from Ben Abel. The math kicked my butt, but I was able to pass and graduate in 1978, two years after Dave Murray started on TV. Up until then if I told someone I was studying meteorology, they would say "oh, you study meteors". Dave made meteorology a household word. The year after I graduated I was invited to speak to a senior's group at a church dinner. I gave a talk on what we look for to forecast severe storms. Plenty of pictures, and the audience contributed plenty of storm stories of their own. Finally, one woman stood up and asked me "do you know that Dave Murray fella". I can't believe the advances made in the field since I graduated. A lot of what you all talk about didn't exist then. That's why I rarely comment in here. You folks are way over my head, but I read everything!!

When did the practice of using an alternate on-air name/personality end? The first time I encountered this was growing up knowing Rusty Sharpe personally and listening to him DJ on a radio station back in the early 70s. His parents played bridge with my folks. Chris, if that is your real name (lol), what would you have your on-air personality name be if that was still a standard practice?

We had two different snowfall events a couple years ago in April...one with thundersnow that dropped several inches. It's fairly unusual, but not a 1 in 25 year event.
Definitely a ripe setup for excessive rainfall over the next week or so. I suspect the EC is holding back too much energy in typical EURO fashion.

I know Branson got hit with a big snow maybe in the past 10 years or so. Wonder if I was out of town or something. Maybe my old memory is starting to fail me.

Look at the date range, that’s primarily because of the Joplin tornado.

A decent number of ensembles bring accumulating snow to the STL metro by next Sunday/Monday.
Substantial rain is the lead story, but there is a chance for some winter fun still.

The foliage is getting to excited with these warm temps. A lot of buds on trees and grass getting green. Hope there’s not a crazy hard freeze after this week that will set them back.

St. Louis has RH below 25% and winds gusting up to 30mph. St. Charles FDs are responding to several brush fires and asking people NOT to burn today. NWS has re-iterated this a couple times on their Twitter feed. Red Flag warning probably would have been justified today...no?

I bet, been seeing lots of little black dots (potential fires) on SW IR satellite mainly in the Mark Twain forest area southwest of Farmington...and those are just the ones big/bright enough to be detected by satellite.

Latest NBM guidance showing 4-5" of rain area wide by Sunday night with axis of highest totals right through the Meramec basin. WPC 7-day forecast is similar with a 5+" contour from about Tulsa to just southwest of St. Louis.
