We are sitting at 2 and a half inches here, according to the rain gauge. We are between Troy, and Silex.

It's May 17th and I feel like I've heard thunder about 3 times all year. One the quietest storm/severe seasons I can recall. Speaking of severe weather; I thought we'd have a rather active season with the La Nina and all and I guesstimated at the beginning of the year that we might have 5 tornado watch days this year. Unless things pick up dramatically (and we have an active later cool season) I may end up busting badly. I'm not seeing any indication yet of a pattern more conducive to widespread severe t-storms in our area either. We are finally getting quality moisture up into our area but the jet looks to migrate north for now. Perhaps toward the end of the month with the GFS hinting at an MCS type pattern developing and fast mid-level flow...or not...who knows. For now it's looking like marginal-ish types of setups with spotty severe reports.

I actually am happy to finally be toasty outside. We dont need severe storms. Im betting we get into the low 90s by the end of the week, and I really want that to let our neighborhood pool warm up for memorial day. I think right now the water temp they told me was only 63. That needs to come up to at least 75 to be tolerable. 80 would be ideal.

We're getting tons of rain. No we're in a drought. Rain. Drought. Rain. Seems to me it's fairly ideal out there right now..moisture wise. Unless you got 4 inches last night up north. Looks like 90 is a decent bet this weekend. Going to feel like summer for sure. That's too bad, the mosquitos have been pretty tame so far.

Mosquitoes haven't been too bad but the black flies sure have been.
Upper 80s and humidity is going to feel pretty gross after such a long stretch of cool weather.

I think that it's too much to ask for a long stretch of open window weather this year.
I have nothing to say about 80s and humidity, other than to say, September is on it's way. Eventually.

I think I know the answer, but I like to defer to those that know more than I, so what are we thinking about the Cards game tonight? I think they'll get it in, but just wanted to get the pulse of the room.

I think they'll get it in, but just wanted to get the pulse of the room. I went to the Mets game that was rained out a couple of weeks ago. It sprinkled for a few minutes, radar was clear and the sun was coming out. Then they canceled. The game should have never been delayed, much less canceled. I never heard why they did not play.

I thought I would post a few pics of the recent plantings in the garden. Hopefully I will be able to one day post pics without looking back at the directions. I am finding out out firsthand as I age, repetition is the only way to be able to recall recent teachings, and even then it's a crapshoot. First pic is from 4/20/21. The plants had been in our outbuilding covered with plastic with grow lights since mid Feb when we had a mass planting. Then a mass transplanting into the Red Solo cups in early April. On nice days we would carry each tray outside to soak up some sun. We were worried about the cold so into the house they came on 4/20. The second pic is the wife's brilliant idea. This was much, much easier....Asparagus, green, yellow, jalapeno, cayenne peppers, two types of watermelons, Marigolds, and mostly tomatoes. We also had a makeshift trellis on the trailer with grow lights that we would plug in at night after rolling the trailer back into the garage. It fell over in the wind one day, luckily no plant damage.

My wife kept trying to arrange a mass planting with the grandkids, as a teaching lesson, but the cold weather kept postponing that, then rain postponements. Now, her and I are both recovering from a 3 day, between raindrops, mass planting. First in was 3 rows of tomatoes. I think there is 25 or so per row. I didn't get pics of yesterdays watermelon and peppers' plantings but here is a few from a week or so ago. These three rows have lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, red and green chard, kolrabi, green onions, spinach, and purple something. The main supervisor is not here to answer my questions. Different view that shows the 3rd row.

Strawberry patch. 4/13..We had just transplanted some shoots from last years patch to double the size. We already have had a dozen or so ripe strawberries. You can see the watermelon trellises in the background that we had just finished. Here is pic from 5/6

Last one....Blackberries with new runners transplanted next to them. These are doing extremely well so far. We just started our third year here at the new place. And to keep these posts within a 'weather' theme, it sure was a nice sunny/partly cloudy day on May 6th.

I’m way behind on our garden this year. Haven’t had the time and the wet weekends didn’t help.

The wife is the architect, cheerleader, whip cracker.....I'm strictly labor, and general mechanic to keep what machinery we have running. It keeps us moving, it's like a workout with a purpose. With all the issues like weather, pests, and diseases it's a wonder humankind did not go extinct learning how to farm.

Anyone know a pool guy that can open and repair a Kayak pool this year preferably? Having a lot of trouble getting some one to do it.

We just bought this house last October. It sat empty for three years. Some one stole the pump and filter in that time. I have absolutely no knowledge of pools so we wanted to have someone come out and take a look and get it all ready for use. The issue is every place I’ve talked to said they are booked until august or they won’t make it till next spring. I’m sure we messed up waiting until May to have it looked at but we were really looking forward to swimming this summer

Looks like the Omega blocking pattern should break down next week allowing the jet stream to become active over head again. Storms and severe weather should become more likely for us

We were told about 5 weeks until they got our fence supplies and then install. So we were looking at sometime in June. Now they told us they won't get the fencing in until end of July. So now we are looking at late Summer for install maybe. Ugh. They said this is because of covid which has delayed their manufacturing. We get all that, but the sales guy didn't tell us that. Talk about falling for the 5 week crap. We were also wanting to put in a pool this yr. But can't until we get a fence due to our HOA subdivision rules.

Yeah I think signs in ensembles and operational models a pointing to a more active end of the month with the westerly / southwesterly jet returning. This late in the season moisture isn't so much of an issue so that should lead to more storm chances. Considering we are talking 7-10 days out or so at the limit of model skill it is entirely possible that all we end up with is just showery or otherwise warm tranquil weather...

I believe the last EF5 rated tornado was May 20, 2013 (Moore, OK). So as long as no EF5 tornado occurs today then tomorrow would mark the longest gap between EF5 rated tornadoes.
