A small Slight Risk issued in the latest outlook north of I-70, mainly in Illinois.

It seems like a very conditional threat, but some CAMs have been showing extreme helicity values in a small area near the surface low Friday. The SPC has no risk area defined tomorrow so it seems like a nothing burger but it does catch your attention. Sounds like another good setup for landspouts. There were several sighted in IL the other day.

US Drought Monitor update came out today. Now the largest coverage of extreme drought ever for that product going back 20+ years at 24.17%. Just edging the previous max back in 2012.
Edit: Probably worth noting that just considering the Western region the extreme and exceptional coverage has been at records for weeks now.

5 years ago today was a fairly significant severe storm according to my FB memories. 21 years ago today (July 15), my son, then 12, became a lightning strike survivor after he and 3 other boys from a boyscout troop were struck by lightning on Taum Sauk Mtn.

It has been nice to see mother nature redistribute the wealth over the last couple of days. We've had some solid rains down this way.

I love it....a forecast for AC to be turned off and attic fan on in the evenings until mid day Wednesday. Really looks like a pretty nice stretch of weather.

12Z GFS and the 600DM Ridge right overhead at the end of the month. Would you please explain what that means weather-wise? In layman's terms? Thanks!

12Z GFS and the 600DM Ridge right overhead at the end of the month. Means if it verifies and it's still a long ways off but the GFS has been more or less persistent that a prolonged period of very hot and dry weather is in store. In other words the 'Dog Days of Summer'.
-Also almost all of North America is smothered in smoke from the Pacific northwest and California fires as well as those in Canada.

I have a sinking feeling that our chances for snow are pretty low for a while. Winter is over folks.

There is still a bit of blue of in the sky today if you look hard. HRRR says smoke densities will continue to increase in our area tomorrow. Most of this is elevated so the biggest effect will be washed out skies and perhaps a degree or so knocked off our highs. The HRRR is showing some of the smoke dropping down to surface, but I'm not sure it'll even be enough smell or cause problems for those with sensitive respiratory systems.
