True you can prune trees any time of the year. But January/March is the best time because of the new growth that will help heal the wounds. I think a lot of tree services are pretty busy right now, and maybe don't want to take on certain jobs(if the times are good type of thing). I've never lost a tree that I have pruned fwiw. The biggest issues I've seen, usually come from heavy sap producing trees in late spring. We have five(I believe), wood boring beetles in Missouri. They love maples!

Today’s 12z op GFS and GEM have backed off on the idea of secondary development the 10-12th. GFS turned it into an Appalachian runner. GEM turned it into an inland nor’easter.
So far, still the only thing winter related to talk about.

So far, still the only thing winter related to talk about. Models will do horrible with the cutoff low next week. Variation in outcomes for temperature could be huge. If it goes way northwest, the metro could be mid 60s easily. If it meanders over the area, 38-45 with heavy rain. Either way, boring.

Any appetite for a rainy deformation zone for Super Bowl weekend? The 12z euro gives you that wonderful opportunity.

Only 27 days until Meteorological Spring As soon as February hits my mind starts shifting to spring. Baseball and severe weather season aren’t to far away. I would take snow in June. Especially in years where it has barely snowed. Give me all the snow. It is fun. Severe weather doesn’t have the fun lead up to an event and usually is an hour period when a squall lines moves through. Hurricane tracking and chasing would be fun.

There is nothing more gratifying and humbling than hitting the X and seeing a tornado in person. The right severe set-up does have a pretty good lead up. The scenery is pretty awesome too when you get out on the plains. 920, pm me if you need a partner sometime.

Will this be another below average severe season in an era of slow seasons across the US? Last month would suggest mother nature isn't messin' around this year, but my [highly unscientific] gut tells me otherwise.
Another fun fact: Metro north counties had no tornado watches all of last year.

Amount of severe t-storm/tornado watches/warnings in spring/summer/fall vs. overall snow the following winter. Just to see if there is a correlation.

You'd think the fading La Nina would support an unsettled/active pattern into Spring...it's sure been a busy one down south most of the winter so far.

On a side note, I was doing some looking on the area NWS sites and from the beginning Last Sunday here in Missouri and Illinois with our Icing event, all the way to south texas, then through the south, this Ice storm as a whole is one of the largest footprints I think I have ever witnessed. Maybe I am wrong but the cost of this storm from Vehicle issues in our area from dangerous roads last week, to the infrastructure damage in the south has got to make this one of the top ice events in our country. It will be interesting to see the numbers on this one. I just hope and pray everyone was safe.

…. And thanks to the yahoo downtown who set off the tornado siren. Not nice alarm clock. The practice of using the tornado siren for anything other than severe weather and nuclear attack needs to stop. My local fire department sounds theirs every time they get dispatched because they are alerting the volunteers who also get texts and a pager that goes off. Then other cities sound it in the morning, noon, and at night. Its frustrating and confusing for the public.

Models look modestly interesting around the 10th with that second wave digging in...there looks to be enough cold air to work with IF something can develop. Models are all over the place with the speed of ejection with the first storm though.
