Sorry.....I'm on the east end of belleville.....need to get that in my signature. Side note...if you don't mind sharing...your name suggests that you are a member of the law enforcement profession? Or are you a huge fan of Blue Bloods? I'm a huge Blues fan! Although I do like Blue Bloods. Blueblood was the only username that included the Blues....somewhat....that was allowed. Bleedblue and many variations was already taken! I'm retired from teaching at SIUE and not involved in any way with law enforcement but I do support and have tremendous respect for them!

Not much excitement showing up in the charts right now. Maybe two more weeks? Is it too soon?

Not much excitement showing up in the charts right now. Maybe two more weeks? Is it too soon? Excitement early on has not bode well for us the last couple years so I’ll take this as a good sign.

I’m fine with a boring, zonal flow through the first half of November
Keep that cold air locked up and building for winter

JMA is saying the opposite of a warm, zonal winter. Its says buckle up and welcome to the Modoki El Niño.

Yes, The JMA says starting in December the warmer waters move to the 3.4 region as opposed to 1 and 2. Right now there is just some slight hints of Cooling in the 1and 2 region. It will depend on the movement of warmer waters west. Also need the EPO to go Negative which it looks "possible " I. Early December, but it's positive in November so lots of zonal flow and Pacific airmasses for this month..Also some hints of a Strat Warming event in December, plus the MJO could be in 7 and 8 for the winter months if all these factors line up! Lots of "ifs" but at least a blow torch is not the only thing on the table. I for one will root for the prior!! Bring on some winter..we should know more in late November if things are lining up..until then mild and boring 😴

It’s worth noting October Siberian snowfall extent was slightly above average.
There is a correlation between higher snowfall extent in this area and a weaker polar vortex.
Again, it was slightly above average, so not a strong signal. However, it beats being below average.
Some evidence of another stretched PV event late November/early December like we had for Halloween.
I don’t buy into draining the cold air if winter starts in November. I’m a believer in getting snow when you can get it. However, I would really enjoy a wintry December for once.
Make December a winter month again!

Modaki El Nino would be better for sure. The QBO is favorable for weak polar vortex, susceptible to stretches and stratospheric warming. The Siberia snow made a big comeback the last week of October. November is a warm month likely. Things may very well look up from early/mid December on. I think cold air will be around d for sure, question is moisture. That may be more plentiful to our south and east. Agree with WSC about the cold drainage in November. It may seem like it drains the arctic down here. But it's still cold up there lol. It's just the pattern changes to keep it from coming south.

Well today will be the last day of the year that sunset will be after 5pm CST. This never used to bother me even in my mid 20s. Now, it really does impact my mood over the long term. Brutal to get done with work, put the baby to bed, and have it seem like it is midnight outside.

Good news is the weather models come out at a reasonable hour starting tomorrow!
Finally will be able to stay up for the euro!
Just need a reason now. Still think we will see one last hurricane in November that can bring snow to the northeast.

I know there’s some really, really smart people on here. Scientific as well. So, here’s my question…
Is there any kind of scientific, economic or even strategic reason for DST? Man I really hate it.

One thing though that comes to mind is the sun wouldn't rise in the morning till 8ish am or after thru Dec and a good portion of Jan. That would seem weird to me.

Way back late 70's/80's the justification was that kids would be waiting for the school bus in the dark in the morning. The day starts a lot earlier now, so that is happening a lot in October and March anyway.

Playing devil's advocate, I wonder how people would feel about a 435 am sunrise and a 730pm sunset in June? I'd think there would be a bit of dissatisfaction with "shortened" summer evenings and sunlight beaming in the ol' bedroom that early.

You also have to consider getting rid of the time change would impact us differently approximately the middle of the country north to south and a time zone than it would those on the edge of a time zone or closer to the northern border.

I'm much more in favor of an 8:20am sunrise in Dec/Jan than I am a 7:30 sunset in June/July...although my wife gives me hell when I'm ready to go to bed and it's still light outside. 4:30am rolls around pretty quickly.
Edit: but people in places like Louisville might not like a 9am sunrise in those months.
