Did gfs also go north? Oh well next system No, it literally shows a blizzard for STL with substantial snow.

The GFS shows several inches of snow, wind gust to 50 mph, and rapidly dropping temps Friday
All fantasy still of course, but the potential is there for something special

OT question--who here has ridden Amtrak from STL to CHI? Coach seats OK vs business class? Preference for upper or lower level?

12z gfs looks great on MLK day for the entire area.
Southerners could do very well on that one with all the arctic air coming down suppressing things a bit.

Not completely opposed, but I fear someone at the ticket desk asking me what I weigh so they know how much fuel to put in the plane.

One thing all the models and ensembles seem to agree on is a rapidly deepening cyclone in the area Friday with arctic air pressing in
This isn’t some modified arctic air coming down either. It’s the real deal polar express

I once had a connecting flight from Philadelphia to Harrisburg on one of those lol. It was like a 22 minute flight and we landed in a field basically.

I'm making no changes to my forecast from last night. There is certainly bust potential along the southern fringe...and there will be those who say the forecast was bad even if it's perfect. So at this point, I'm going to let it ride and we'll see how this goes!

Boy, one jog north and some of us are ready to move on to the next system. This is one jaded bunch. Lots of time and adjustments to come. Have to remain patient.

I’m sure it’s just fantasy but I have never seen this many runs in a row on the GFS of 20+ inches of snow for our area…… If only lol

So much nicer riding the double decker but the one level ride is fine too.

Actually some decent consistency around 100 hours for ICON, GFS and GEM this morning.
Pretty safe to say there will be a major winter storm in the Midwest somewhere on Friday and right now, I think the area is in a good spot. All 3 look nice and organized at 500 with GEM being most sheared out. GFS way more closed off which allows N movement and cold air to wrap around a lot faster.

Going with the upper level.
Thanks!

OT question--who here has ridden Amtrak from STL to CHI? Coach seats OK vs business class? Preference for upper or lower level? I rode Amtrak coach from San Antonio to St. Louis 16 years ago. It was comfortable. Several colleagues of mine take it to Chi when we travel for a conference, they typically drive to Alton as the overnight parking is better up there and it shortens the trip, especially if TRRA holds them up crossing the bridge. I would definitely take the train if i was going up there for pleasure. If I'm going on business, I typically uber from Belleville to Lambert Terminal 2 and catch a flight and then uber to the hotel.

You absolutely DO NOT want to book a trip from STL to Chi on the Eagle. It could be 9 hours late getting into STL. Its typically fine for the CHI to STL trip though.

I just hope we can get some solid snowpack down before we go into the deep freezer early next week so it'll stick around and give my 6yo kiddo the opportunity to do some sledding/snowman building. He was super bummed we didn't get any snow in December. If the 12Z GFS snow depth map pans out, by 6pm Monday the majority of the area will be under a foot of actual accumulated snow. I'll take it!

For storm #2 it looks like the axis of heaviest snow on the UKMET is from Jefferson City to Peoria to Chicago. It's probably widespread 1 foot amounts in that band with significant blowing and drifting.

Chris’ future cast video on FB is excellent. The dry slot is our friend as it may somewhat save any WAA snow we get.
