It seems that we are in a multi-year winter pattern that has shifted the season and subsequently the storm track. This pattern is allowing for some pretty stout cold air intrusions, pushing us well below zero with less than ideal conditions to do so. However, those intrusions are usually short lived and in between we end up with slightly above normal temps. It makes snow pretty hard to come by. I don’t think “slightly above normal temps” is the best way to describe the last few winters. More like “record shattering warmth”. I wouldn’t say that “record shattering” is the correct verbiage as well. Record breaking, sure. But, I also don’t put much stock in temp records. When some of these were “set”, we were still using leaches to treat people and you could get cocaine in your cola. I was referring to the average. They’ve been running 2-5 degrees, on average, above normal….seemingly every year for the last 4-5 years. But, I can remember our January “thaws” of the early 2010s. We would habitually see temps into the 70s. And then I have FB memories showing snow well into March. I’m not talking the 24 hour snow either. We maintained a pack for 4-7 days. But, I’m also 100 miles north or so. Large scale, not that far from you, but small scale like we are talking, it’s enormous!

That would be cool. I bought a spotting scope recently. I have been using it to observe an eagle's nest on the west end, but I'm planning on using it to look at the moon one night soon, and I'll buy a solar filter to use it on the eclipse. I haven't decided on a destination yet, probably going to head more east than south.

Could this be the last snowfall of the season unless something unexpected happens?

Could this be the last snowfall of the season unless something unexpected happens? Who knows, still almost 2 months of snow season left. Anyone know what happened to the SSW event that was supposed to happen this week?

Anyone know what happened to the SSW event that was supposed to happen this week? The Euro 06z Initialization shows a big StratWarm occurring at 10mb Temp map. I don't have access to it so I can't post it. Maybe someone on here will. It will be interesting to see if it has any effect end of March into April.

Anyone know what happened to the SSW event that was supposed to happen this week? It's in progress. Models were showing another burst of warming developing into early March which would help the vortex remain weak and stretched. Should be some cold air sloshing around next month...where it goes remains to be seen.

I’ll go out on a limb and say mid-late next week brings snow to the region.
First low is going to hit Canada and start to bring the cold air down.
Then, wave number 2 is the crucial part. Does it come out in one piece and cut hard bringing severe weather?
I say no. I think it splits in two with energy digging into the 4 corners like the 00z Icon shows.
Then, the part that doesn’t dig will shear out and occlude preventing much if any severe weather.
Instead, it will bring the cold air even closer.
Then, the energy that dug into the southwest will eject out and become the dominant low with heavy snow.
The end.

Decided to try my cheap spotting scope with cell phone mount to look at the moon. It's very shaky, but I'm under a hundred for the scope and tripod from Amazon.

Very cool! Interesting smell in the air tonight. It's smoke from wildfires in Arkansas based on satellite imagery.

Not that there's ever a good time to do it but can't they find a better time to do radar maintenance than at the time where winter storms transition to spring severe weather?

Meh, first couple weeks in March is better than the the first couple weeks in May. Anyway, we can get almost anything at anytime, so it matters little.

I don't see anyone posting it yet so I thought I would. Right now so far through February our average temp is 45.3° through yesterday. Using the forecasted highs and lows through Thursday the average is 52.1°. That gives a monthly average of 48.7 ° which would break the 2017 February average record of 47.7°. Sure is getting hard to get any snow the rest of February with those temps forecasted. Was there any model showing this kind of extreme for this month. I know from Chris's title of this current blog that it already started off with a Head Start.🥵🥵

Just based on the outlines of the Outlooks next week, Wednesday over the mid-south will be a big day, seems that area always gets smoked. Tuesday will probably be more conditional, just based on geography.... Of course it will do something becuase its a storm forecast and not snow.

Noticing some of the grass here is starting to green up and grow
With no real cold air in sight, this might be a very early start to the mowing season

Tuesday looks like a good setup for isolated supercells across the region...open warm sector with weak height falls/PVA and the jetstreak nosing in
