Went from a picture perfect day to dark and turbulent skies in a hurry
Never trust the NW flow

Hey experts - I made a drive down Pottle in South County and noticed a lot of what appeared to be tornado damage. This street is > 86 yards (half of the 172 width they posted) away from the track the NWS posted for the Oakville tornado. Do you think that damage is related? Which way were the downed trees pointing? It's possible it was inflow jet or as Brtn mentioned... RFD or FFD related. Hard to know without putting eyeballs on it myself.

I’m just on the south side of that track west of Rte 3 in Columbia IL. Assuming my tree damage is RFD?

This is confusing to me. There was so much more damage than they listed. Car windows blown out, several carports collapsed, guttering and some siding pulled off, roof damage on many homes. Definitely more than tree damage and one carport.

EF-1 rating pretty much covers everything listed. Looks like they just didn't go into great detail in the report.

This should be a nearly completed storm report map from Sunday with NWS surveys wrapping up. An active day would be an understatement.

Thank you! I appreciate the info. I wasn't questioning the rating , because I trust greater minds than mine to figure that out. Was more confused about the statement that there was only one carport that was damaged, and a shed. But I do really appreciate the reminder about the ratings, and I think my neighbor will too. Thanks for taking the time to answer. And I'm sure most of you have heard this before, but following storms, seeing nature's fury off in the far distance over farm fields is vastly different from seeing a tornado pop over your friends' and neighbors' houses.

Agreed--and it was really for everyone's reference. It's really a fluid process, with each office adding countless data points every year to help compare ground data to what they've seen on radar. NWS Paducah had a really good write-up on that, I think yesterday.
EDIT--and I removed the graphic from your reply...just for the sake of saving page space.

Definitely more than tree damage and one carport. Back in the day, they used to do those high-resolution maps with markers for where damage was surveyed and pictures to show it. Not sure why that isn’t done anymore, but I thought those pieces of data were important for 1) understanding what occurred and 2) being good learning tools to help identify straight-line wind damage compared to tornadic damage.

The cicadas are everywhere in my yard now.
They are loud.
My dogs love eating them. They've made a sport of it.
Question...is their cadence synchronized all over the region?

We’re past the peek of the cicadas. Noticing less and less. Our chickens sure do love chasing the low flying ones!

Just had a couple heavy downpours...it just keeps raining! The outflow ahead of those cells was pretty strong...probably 40mph+

I've seen a GIS map before that the track was a polygon showing width

It has been pretty nice being able to turn the AC off and open up the windows this week.

Have to remember these surveys were all done on Memorial Day... so they also may have been done a little faster than normal.

NWS in Texas used DVD sized hail as a descriptor earlier this week. The hail was over 5 inches.

I'm pretty sure they received a report of the measurement from a chaser collecting hail stones and entered in 5 inch hail and DVD was the descriptor tag. It had never been used before.
