This being a general topic thread..the rules may be a bit "loose" in here. However, name calling is still a no no. Lizard asked for this to be civil at the top of page 1. Let's keep it that way. Have an adult conversation and don't make me be mean..ya bunch of unevolved monkeys.

I didn't see the second episode yet, but if biology is on the table for Cosmos episodes then surely we'll see some attention given to the atmospheric sciences right? It is such an under appreciated field outside of longterm climate research. I want to see NdT talk about the science of tornadogenesis and winter storms. That would be awesome!

Hopefully, we can steer this thread back to Cosmos-related posts. My bad. Carry on.

I watched the latest episode last night, before i went to bed. And I would say, that the term "Evolution" was kinda loosely used. When I heard it was used in it, I was all alert to see what the explanation was going to be. After watching it, I realized it was more "Adaptation". How nature will slowly change the structure of the DNA to fit the surroundings. Our bodies do this everyday. I know when I started my job, I could not walk into the dairy cooler W/O a heavy coat on. Now, I walk in there with a T-Shirt on and can be in there for a few hours (Now the ice cream freezer is another thing). I really didn't see anything so offensive on the show. Most they talked about was natural selection. And once again, that happens everyday. I guess you missed the stuff about mutation and birth of a species. Two things that would meld well with the creation aspect. I wonder what blocked you ears from that?

This is only a fraction of the amount of distinct species that we have evolved thru from primate to hominid. Habilis and rudo were very important. One of them was exclusively vegan or near exclusive while the other not only ate meat they would kill the other species and eat them if need be. You could almost say one was a hunter while the other was a gatherer. Habilus won. They also ate meat and created stone tools better than the plant eating hominids. I love the transition from ape features to man features. One major thing was their brains were almost double the size of africanus which was still almost soley ape in brain. The body evolved first then the explosion of brain prowess happened when hunting, migrating, and strategic social hierarchy took hold. And obviously major competition for survival. More importantly the meat eating(high protein, amino acid diets helped spawn a rapid growth in metabolism to help fuel the growing brain. Arguably the most important hominid came from this win homo erectus who dominated longer and farther than any before him and alonger than any since. After 800K years or so of dominance Erectus spawned the first truely modern human homo heidelbergensis. Modern in body and brain this species advanced hunting, social structure and adaptation into the cold icy Earth. Finally ! POOPY ! hit the fan. And somewhere between the guy above and another species or more came the two powerhouses. Neanderthal left. Homo sapien right. The end. So far:

I should also say I think our next natural evolutionary step if we make it that far without some intervention.
The next one on a large scale will mostly be with energy metabolism to increase energy efficiency, possibly lowering our body size/lean muscle mass for stronger neural function.
We could evolve smaller more efficient neural pathways, better receptors for transmitting chemicals, synthesizing proteins, creating enzymes and such without having much energy metabolism change.
Or say we adapt to keep our lean mass how it is but be able to maintain it with 10% less energy and have that go to cognitive function instead.
The bottom line is our brains are no where near their potential use or potential development threw evolution and more likely human tinkering threw drugs, technology, dna engineering and such.
