These are the days that yaktrax were made for. Used them in Yellowstone on the boardwalks in January of 09 and every winter thereafter.

In just about 1/2 hour our parking lot turned from a slight sheet of ice, to white from sleet.

12z hires nam goes nuts with the deformation zone Tuesday.
That thing needs to be watched, as it has decent potential and would really catch a lot of people off guard.

Whoa. 12z NAM is a bit crazy. Even paints an ongoing ice storm along and north of I70 in IL

HRRR is similar, but a little further north than the 3K NAM with the Monday ice.

Freezing rain is like a bad ex girlfriend. Pretty to look at in the right light, but at the end of the day just a pain in the arse with no real redeeming qualities. Lol! So true.

Sheet of ice. I had to carry my 70 lb dog in because he couldn’t walk on sidewalk. Just what you need. Makes you nicely out of balance on the ice. As if it wasn't enough trouble just trying to walk before that

As many of you know GOES-17 (West) will become operational soon and many of our favorite sites have added GOES-17 imagery to their products. Of course one of my favorites College of DuPage (COD) just added their GOES-17 sectors a few days ago so be sure to check that out. What some of you may not know is that GOES-17 has a problem. Information is kinda limited and hard to find so I might not be completely correct with all of this. But as I understand it the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI), which produces the imagery we're all familiar with, has an issue with its cooling system. It is suspected that there is some foreign object debris (FOD) in the loop heat pipe plumbing which is preventing the transfer of heat from the ABI to a radiator. So during the satellite's "warm season" after the solstices and before the equinoxes and during the Earth night, when the Sun is behind the Earth relative to the satellite, the issue is at its worst with several of the IR channels becoming saturated and washing out. This appears to be happening right now with many of the products from channels 8-16 unusable or degraded starting from about 12UTC and lasting for a few hours. Here is what the water vapor channel showed a few hours ago (it has since almost fully recovered for the day) and it doesn't matter what site you get these products from they all have the same problem.

These are the kind of days when I miss my old studded snow tires. Missouri no longer permits them. I understand the reasoning. But I still miss them.
Fortunately i have no place to be today. Other than right here looking out

For those interested in the late week storm, the 12z gfs and ggem show a very strong storm tracking right through the metro, so the extreme winter weather is confined north.
The 00z euro obviously had a more desired track for you guys, so it will be interesting to see the 12z ukmet and euro.
Either way, all models show a strong storm, and it is within a 100 miles of being quite impactful.

From winter weather advisory to flood watch in 6 hours, typical.
Roads in town down this way improving quickly with plain rain, out of town where it’s a tic cooler its still dicey

Sounds like a big swing and miss for MoDOT. They are going with the "rain washed the pretreat away" story, but the precipitation was never that hard. Talked to people from other jurisdictions that were out all night and didn't see any MoDOT trucks until the precipitation had started.

Any perfect track more than 5 days out ie next week should be tossed out. Sw flow aloft is way too strong and even if it weakens, storms are wagons north compared to the longer leads model depiction. Cant rule out backside stuff on the storms where the trough turns neg but nothing big.

I find that guy who theyve been interviewing less convincing than others in the past. I dont know if he is in a leadership position or if hes just a communications person. At any rate, im not buying the wash away story either.

We went to the gym around 9 and then QT. Roads are slushy/wet/somewhat slick. We didn't get on the highway. Parking lots are terrible. I was kind of scared to move my feet a couple of times in the QT lot. All is well though. Be careful out there.

It doesn't matter. That nice storm track the Euro was showing has already been ordained a no go.
