Every radar does that... the radar beam is angled up into the sky. It’s picking up the snow 1000 ft up that’s not reaching the ground. As the column saturates and snow makes it closer to the ground- the radar hole shrinks until it eventually makes it to the ground

Lol Why does it always do that around st Louis? Why is the air always so dry? There's a lot of dry air everywhere. The farther from St. Louis the higher the radar beam is sampling the atmosphere before the snow has evaporated. Many of the areas where it looks like snow is falling on radar aren't reporting snow. Edit: Ah, Coz beat me to it.
