Haven't seen many pics out of JC yet. Hearing conflicting reports on severity of the damage. Pretty impressive based on what i saw. Reports of a collapsed apartment building but i havent seen. The state capitol looks intact but there was some construction related damage as best as i can see from the pics that chris posted on fb.

Damage in Jeff City looks like high-end EF2...possibly EF3.

The State Track Meet was scheduled in Jefferson City beginning tomorrow. My guess is it will postponed since the tornado went pretty much over the venue.
Even though I have reverse 911, my cell phone by the bed, and left the computer on last night, I slept with the TV on all night. Figured if I had that on, I could quickly check what was going on, and where, by the graphic at the bottom. I only get concerned about severe weather at night when we are asleep and I cant keep track of it.
State track meet? Seems late. We always had ours in early May but that was back in early 80s. 4A? 3, 4 and 5. Just saw that it was suspended. They moved the date until late May several years ago. I heard from my cousin who lives down there. She was in the path, but it wasn't on the ground at that time. She said it was pretty bad though.

Damage in Jeff City looks like high-end EF2...possibly EF3. Exactly. Those reports floating around of it being and EF5 were/are very irresponsible. I drove through Joplin on the 4th of July, 2011...and saw what a monster can do. This one in Jeff is no where even close to that...

Interesting how Monday was all hyped up and barely anything happened, then yesterday was barely on the radar and BOOM. Probably could have a used a high risk for parts of OK and MO. Weather is cray cray

Relative near JeffCity sent me this..."we live just about 6 miles from Jefferson City, the tornado went over us and left our yard with insulation from a building in Jeff, Jeff City looks horrible"

Thankfully this time we didn’t need to rush down to the basement.

Aside from the tornadoes, lots of water has fallen over LOZ and tributaries to the Missouri River over the last 24 hours. The updated Mississippi River crest forecast at STL this morning should reflect that.

Weather is cray cray Just goes to show that even in this day in age with all the advancement in technology, weather forecasting is still somewhat unreliable...there will always be the chaos aspect that can't be fully resolved. It's sure fun to try to figure out though

Most of those reports were from news outlets that are not local. I can understand how that happens when every news outlet want to be the first one to get the information out, and rely on bits and pieces of information getting out from unreliable social media sources. There is no excuse for it though. Many of these sources need to put out corrections/retractions to their earlier stories though.

The forecrest crest on the Missouri have gone down like 1-3 feet from Hermann to St Charles Wonder if thats after last nights rain and the next couple of days forecast across MO? According to the graphs, it accounts for the rain that has fallen to that point, and what is forecast in the next 24 hours. The forecast for the Meramec at Pacific went down about 2 feet this morning as well.

Well... glad that is over. Viedo I have seen so far is seems to be right at EF2/3. I would say 3 for sure if I knew what the quality of some of that construction was. Also possible we haven't seen all of that worst of the damage in the video that I glanced at

I havent seen or heard anybody saying anything like that. I did hear the word devastating, which i thght was overstating...and for the record, when i said pretty impressive, i wasnt thinking joplin at all. Its, as brtn pointed out, a mid range.

I think the NWS may have created a lot of the hype themselves by calling it a "catostrophic" tornado on the ground as it was happening. Call it large, extremely dangerous...get your point across. By definition, this tornado was hardly catostrophic. And maybe they didn't even use that term, but that is what the local news station I was watching relayed....this was 15 mi from my house.

May have been a random person commenting in the NWS thread on FB last night looking for damage reports/photos. Now that I think about it, I think that's where it was. So Joe the Plumber giving his unprofessional EF rating. Yay.

The Joplin ef5 scoured pavement and lifted 100+ pound manhole covers off of streets. It threw firetrucks miles and IIRC sucked a group of walmart employees out of a sealed freezer room. Havent seen anything close to that yet in photos. You’d essentially be looking for well built homes completely swept clean of the foundation.

Tell that to the people that have no home anymore. Literal definition of catastrophic: "involving or causing sudden great damage or suffering." I'd say it applies.

Just saw some drone footage on TWC from Charles Peak (some storm chaser) from Jeff City and it looks pretty bad. Definitively agree with the EF-3 guess. That apartment complex was hit hard. Roofs partially torn off and debris everywhere. Looks like it may have hit a church too. It looked to me like a rather large (wide) tornado. Impressive path of destruction. Thank God no fatalities! Kudos to the NWS/SPC for the warnings/watches keeping people safe!

If this one was catostrophic, then what word describes Joplin? 7 injuries in a major metropolitan area last night vs 160 lives lost and over a thousand injuries in Joplin.
