Why the freeze watch and warning to the south? What about the Metro area?? Did we all go below last night? Reading the AFD I think they are expecting clouds to keep temps just above freezing in the “middle” counties. That might just be my interpretation of it though

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone.
I need to enlist the minds and memories of the group. I am trying to look back and find the dates of a couple of those very very light QPF events that ended up crippling the morning or evening commute. I specifically remember two of them. One was in early December I think that turned a 2 hour drive from Columbia into an 8 hour ordeal for my niece. These are events that never made the record books because they were so light... but we all remember because of the impact.

December 16th 2016 I believe is the event your thinking of Chris.
AKA The freezing drizzle disaster

Chris , the big one was the Friday in December of 2016 very light (not really forecasted) qpf event that started around noon and almost just “misted” until around midnight. Pavement temperatures were very cold from previous cold temps. Air temperatures slowly rose above freezing after midnight. It was not forecast by really any one , someone on here started talking about freezing mist /drizzle that (Rolla area) moved in from the south west through out the late morning and afternoon hours . It took about 1-2 hours of precipitation falling to literally turn all untreated pavement into ice rinks

Happy Birthday, Chris! Hope that you had a wonderful day!
The only truly memorable freezing event was Freezemaggedon. Wasn’t supposed to be caught in it, but I was. The only thing that saved me was my Extreme traction and AWD on my Subaru. So profound because I never saw a single rain drop on my windshield. Something that I never hope to experience again. Spent most of my time on the Illinois side of the river. Completely untreated interstate there. Still haven’t forgiven IDOT. Crazy.

28 in st.peters. looks like hard freeze occured and even though tonight may be a bit colder, no freeze warning will be needed anymore for the metro as it looks like the growing season is over now for the northern 2/3 of the area.

Models are consistently showing a big storm system mid next week. Severe weather would be more likely than any winter precip at this point though.

Yep hard freeze out here. Garden is officially done. I am currently at my low of 31*. I thought it was going to get colder by the way the temp was falling last night. I guess the cloud cover helped some. I covered some kale, green onions, garlic, lettuce, mustard greens, kohlrabi, turnips, beets, and broccoli last evening. Hoping for the best. The broccoli looks amazing. It did way better with the fall planting than the earlier crop.

December 16th 2016 I believe is the event your thinking of Chris. AKA The freezing drizzle disaster That's the one! That's the only storm that has ever forced me to spend the night away from home. I had gone out to check my trapline and to help fry turkeys for a big Christmas party the next day. As I headed to the turkey fry the roads were just starting to get wet and in a matter of ten minutes it was a white knuckle fight to keep the truck on the road.

Yeah, that definitely has a decent signal for supportive kinematics for severe wx if instability exists...but just based on thickness values, I'd say the airmass might be pretty marginal. The EC is more robust with a deep cyclone wrapping up across the N/central Plains that would provide better moisture transport.

haha gfs has a nice snow next friday. Can't wait That would be a great way for winter to give me the middle finger before it even begins lol. I think the lead wave would need to come in weaker to spin something that strong up as a secondary low, but there has been some ensemble support over the last couple runs.

Yeah, the GFS has been trying to spin up a secondary low that puts us in the cold sector later next week but it's got very little support. Either way, a return to an active period of weather looks likely and turning mild with the warm front lifting through.

Fun to look at, but that’s about it
