I think tonorrow we may make a run. At 50 I know it is tough with the snow, but it is currently 57 in Omaha, while we are 27.t Tomorrow will be very favorable west to sw winds. Now come mud season lol. That does not happen very often!!! “Bold move Cotton, let’s see how this plays out.” Weather on the Ocho.

Dr. Cohen is tweeting about the strong stratospheric PV finally coupling with the troposphere. Given where we are at in the winter season, that could effectively shut the door on winter if it happens.
Something to watch closely this week.
The one saving grace is even a strong PV is susceptible to “stretching” which was a primary driver for the cold month of January we just had.

If I recall, he’s stated this winter we haven’t actually had a split, but just some “stretches”. One in November and one in January.

If I recall, he’s stated this winter we haven’t actually had a split, but just some “stretches”. One in November and one in January. Multiple stretches in January. The really unusual thing has been how long the stratosphere and troposphere have remained “decoupled.” It has saved us from a very mild winter. Add in the stretch events in January and you can see how we salvaged a good month of winter. Now, if the coupling occurs, we may be in some trouble. Nothing is locked in yet of course, just something to watch for where the back half of February might end up. The other caveat is that if the coupling happens, there will likely be a brief transition period that could yield material winter weather.

Pretty sure that my 47* reading on the front porch is another bogus remote temp. Sensor is hanging on a post/column away from morning sun. Apparently the sun warms the concrete porch.

I have 42 right now, gutters are rushing like a rainstorm. Unfortunately the sumppump pipe is froze and I am about 1 inch from going over the pit. But atleast the basement is not finished. I still feel a strong run at 50 today. I have lost atleast half the snow sofar.

I love seeing the animal tracks as the only evidence trespassing. I noticed going down to Farmington yesterday that the snow looked much like there was much less than at the house off the side of the Hwy 67 across the many fields down there. I thought they had more ice/sleet but about the same amount of snow as I had in De Soto. Lots of animal tracks heading out into the fields. Notice: There will be a "Grass Watch" hoisted today. Be on the lookout for possible blades of grass trying to make an appearance around the area. A subtle reminder to cut your grass shorter next fall.

Sitting at 40 right now. Yard still covered. Lots of compaction going on too. The snow is good for packing now too. Get out and get a snowperson built today! ❄️❄️☃️🙂

The thaw-freeze cycle of the next few days... and the presence of a dense layer or sleet below...and widespread nature of the snow shield may make this slower to melt than you might normally think.

Guyatacomputer I have a small pump running to the basement floor drain. Seems to be working since that drain is connected to the city sewer

Catching up on a week's worth of work, bills and family time now.

No need to start a fresh thread with no real threat of a storm for the next 15 days , if something pops up and becomes a watcher then start a new thread. Looks pretty quiet around here for a while. Hopefully we’re not done with winter.

We got darn close to 50 today. Probable would of been 70 with no snow cover. I have bare grass where drifting caused the snow to be less.deep. id say 60 percent is gone. It was a very successful meltdown today. I think we are melting soo efficiently in the st.charles area becasue we did not have nearly much if any sleet as compared to down south.

Amazing amount of warmth here at the homestead today. Touched 8° for a short period this morning right before sunrise and rose up to 47° this afternoon. Still sitting at 44° as the sun goes down.

Boston had their 2 feet of snow melt in 48 hours. It’s hard to keep a snowpack for most of the country.

Snowpacks can be held, but it usually helps if they are at the beginning of the pattern change and not at the end. That happened with Boston’s and to some degree is what is happening to ours.
Overnight lows below freezing will help keep the pack somewhat as well.
Just about time to start tapping the maples.

A fellow I know has boiled down almost 600 gallons of sap so far. The sap should be pouring out of them this week.

Interesting, but certainly doesn’t disprove the relationship between warmer waters and stronger storms. Similar logic could be applied to lung cancer and cigarettes. Not everyone who gets lung cancer smokes, but that doesn’t mean the causal relationship is broken.

Models showing a pretty active southern jet starting middle of next week through end of month. The 17th-18th still looks like an interesting time frame on the GEFS and EPS
