Furnace is in good shape. Fireplace is in good shape. Had to replace some panels which set me back a sum, so i need a couple small half hour fires to cure the panels before a big fire. But i dont hv a lot of fires. I find fireplaces not efficient at all. Now i wish i can just get my windows replaced. Next big expense probably this spring. Will have to do this winter. Triple bay facing north. Not good for windy cold. Lol.
Long term, i think its reasonable to expect a reload, repeat and rinse pattern. Im envisioning a 10 to 14 day of alternate cycles. Somebody mentioned 30 inches of snow wintet total not out of the question. I agree. Hopefully not the intense cold, but probably cold enough for lots of snow.

I agree in general with the fireplace comment but my wood insert beats the heck out of just having my masonry chimney open...

Just one thing about high wind and fireplaces, I stopped doing fires on extremely windy days because once the fire burned low, the wind blew down the fireplace and blasted my kitchen area with ashes. At some point, will do an insert, but we just did most of our windows this year. So maybe next year. Windows took forever. Had them measured in March, they didn't come in until August, and then they cancelled installation twice. Got them finally installed mid November. It was worth the wait but the wait was long.

Maybe it won’t be as bad south of the watch, i think that may be a true statement. But the going forecasts are still the same.

Yes Chicago is in the sweet spot for most models , they will likely see 6-12” with 30-50 mph winds. If I was the weather channel I would set up near Chicago too.

Pretty solid runs today. I think there’s still a little room for higher totals as well. 00z will be fun!

Yeah, for a big snow, we want this rocket to slow down. I hesitate to use the word bullet.

Chicago NWS disco mentions possible 1-2’ totals in banding and winds gusting over 55mph. Not really looking forward to working on my holidays with this one. Would really like to spectate from my couch. WSC, we’re heading down to STL for New Years as well. Sounds like the best bet.

Sounds like that is the benchmark unless you want to go way back to the 70s.

Elburn had something like 84” in 2011 and most of it was on the ground at once. Something like 3 solid months of snow cover. They ran out of places to put it. Thanks for the well wishes! Should be interesting!

from the afd: Snow/liquid ratios are also uncertain with some guidance as low as 7:1 and others showing upwards of 20:1.
I figure the winds will tear apart the dendrites. qpf looks to be in the neighborhood of about .30, but that could include about 30 minutes of light rain/sleet at onset as we may be just south of freezing here. Hopefully tonight confidence grows in whatever track. Main thing is that this thing is zipping along; As Chris said (or maybe somebody), these clipper systems tend to move faster than progged. if you lay down for a nap, you could miss it.

Definitely going very conservative on their snow totals, T-1” for downtown, yikes, it will be interesting to see how that works out

WSC , that’s good to see a little increase in in SREF , it would be nice to see the GFS and GEFS come in closer to the GEM

Who wouldn't? lol My wife and I were in Chicago in early November visiting a nephew. I guess we had pre-conceived notions about Chicago and we were so wrong. I'm not a city person but I would go back in a heartbeat. Our nephew had a townhouse on the 11th floor of a 42? story building. The food was amazing, the people were amazing. Sure seems like it gets a bad rap on the news. We rode the river boat history tour, Sears Tower or whatever it has changed to, numerous restaraunts via Uber. I highly recommend it. The visit was right after a frontal passage with heavy winds the previous 2 days. Skies were crystal clear.
