Nothing says a mtwstl wedding like the only tornado warning of the day And one dropping in from the northwest...because, why not?

Still getting the hot and dry vibes...hopefully we can keep catching backdoor fronts like models are showing later next week but some rain with them would be welcomed.
The 1.2" we got last Sunday was great but it's going to dry out quickly over the next week.
I do have my doubts about the upper 80s/low 90s Thurs/Fri with that backdoor potential though...at least the humidity should stay in check.

Ensembles are below average for rainfall the next 10+ days. We'll see how this plays out. If the ridging setups west and we're in the northwest flow it might not be so bad. But you know even if that is the general pattern the ridge will slide east at least for 1 or 2 shots at 100+ days.

My rain gauge was bone dry this morning. Hopefully the slight rain chances this week will over-produce as much as the yesterday's/last nights system under-produced. It was an awesome day at the Living Water Academy School where the Home School Market was held this year. Just a gorgeous day.

We got barely enough the dampen the pavement in Brighton...maybe a few hundredths at best. Had to water the garden today. It's looking like a rough stretch coming up, unfortunately.

It's looking like a rough stretch coming up, unfortunately. our garden/ground is still pretty 'moist'. the weeds pull out real easy still. I wish the heavy rains would've drowned out the ants. They have been brutal to the young plants so far this year. A summer of 'Ridge Runners' through the area periodically would be nice.

I've noticed the ants too...they are just bursting from the ground everywhere. Guess that's what was chewing up my young tomato transplants...first leaf sets were turned to swiss cheese but they finally came out of it.

I've been spraying this all natural mint spray in the house and around the perimeter for weeks.
I finally had to lay down some insect granules outside in the grass.

I wonder if that’s what’s been gnawing on my small petunias. If it is ants you should be able to see a push up area around the base of the plant at ground level. Almost looks like small beads circling the stem of the plant. The wifer just tried cinammon 4 days ago but didn't phase them. We are finding nests/eggs under some of the larger rocks used as deco/corner borders and she will put Sevin's dust at those areas but we still try and not use it on the plants except for a Hail Mary last chance kind of thing. She had to do that last year wrt the ant problem. Edit: The ants seem to attack the roots of our plants and the plant just withers and dies with no obvious damage on the leaves.

I've been feeding them a steady diet of Terro in the house for about a month now. I don't know how many colonies I have, or if they just haven't made it to the queen yet, but I seem to have an infinite supply of them this year.

I see forecast temps have been slashed almost 15 degrees later this week...not surprising with the strength of that backdoor cold front/ridge. Sure hope we can keep up that trend in the coming months...we haven't really had a cool summer since 2013.

I was inundated with ants in my kitchen when I first moved here and developed a system. YMMV but here it is:
Terro ant stakes in all of my flower beds near the foundation of the house.
Make a little bowl out of foil, like the size of a nickel, in the kitchen in the area that is problematic. Put in a about 2-4 ml of Terro liquid. Place it under the edge of whatever appliance they seem to be drawn to. For me, it was tucked way under my dishwasher.
Then outside, closest to the area where they seem to be coming in, I use" Hot Shot Ultra Clear Roach & Ant Gel Bait". Comes in a large syringe. Wear latex gloves. Open outside. My problem was only my kitchen area. So I would squirt bits in a rough line into the crack at the edge of the foundation near that part of the house, and at the backdoor, just before the threshold.
Never saw a line outside, but adding the Combat, did the trick. I usually do it once in the Spring, but will do it again in the Summer/Fall if there has been a lot of rain. This is my yearly Spring ritual and I've never had an issue again.
Coming from CA near the SF Bay, you only have potential for a handful of problematic bugs. Ants being the main one, because of excessive sand in the soil, which they love. They come in for two reasons. Too much rain, they're looking for a dry place. Or more frequently, not enough rain, they're looking for water.
Btw, for me, I also had an issue here of a boatload of box elder bugs that loved my white siding and would congregate on it in the late afternoon sun. Once I did the Combat, that stopped too. Again, YMMV, but it works for me. I don't want to spray pesticides in or outside of my house if I can help it. I moved here, with young kids and dogs. Wanted to minimize their exposure.
It's worked so for me. Good luck.

It's worked so for me. Good luck. Terro is crack for ants. I'm amazed at how many can pile onto one of the little cardboard squares with about 5 drops on it. I've also doubled down with a couple of the stakes outside. I'll pour just a little onto the ground and let it run down the outside of the stake, just to make sure they find it. There's currently about a 1/2" of them piled onto the liquid in each of the them. For me--it's been under the kitchen sink, under the dishwasher, in the front bedroom, and most recently in one of the upstairs bathrooms. Mostly just scouts until I put the bait out. Then it turns into a party with free buffet.
