HRRR keeps showing a large rogue supercell this afternoon out ahead of the main line this evening. Time to be on guard today.

It’s definitely the earliest I’ve looked at my lawn and actually considered mowing it.

FV3 and RGEM are on board with that idea too. Many rotating supercells being modeled in western MO initially before moving into our area late Thursday night. That looks pretty nasty.

I'm a little on guard about tonight. I think it'll blow just to my west or right on top of me.

I believe you are correct. I think we had some ice after that as well. Yep, it was in the mid/upper 70s with severe storms along the front and sleet/snow squalls behind it with temps crashing into the 20s That was Feb 2nd, 2006 right?

2012 had a few found in SW MO on around February 27-28. Then, by third week of March it pretty well was over for us. The blowtorch that ran from March through July basically. That particular year was rough for me personally (my own doing mostly), and I don't remember much about the 2012 Spring weather or morel season. I definitely remember the record setting hot dry summer, though, so it makes sense. Also a little concerning if it also translates to this summer's pattern. It was bad. Dry warm winds started late Feb. no moisture at all. Very Different than the current pattern.

BRTNWXMAN did you see they've recorded the first official morel find of the Spring in the state of MO down in far SWMO in McDonald county?? Soil temps in my area are already running about 40°. This seems WAY out of the norm. 😳 2012 had a few found in SW MO on around February 27-28. Then by third week of March it pretty well was over for us. Heavy snow in Perryville under the last bands. Might muster out an inch. I had my fun up at work with the thunder snow though earlier!

Thunder sleet with pea sized hail mixed it. Very noticeable lightning and thunder. Ground is covered down here in Ste Gen. I have a good video of the sleet/hail mix I’ll try to upload. Can’t remember the last time I’ve seen this amount of sleet. Maybe groundhog storm mid 2000’s I heard similar reports from folks back home but I figured they were just large sleet pellets. Legit hail eh?

Thunder snow in northern Ste. Gen County!
I can't help but think this must have been what 1982 looked like, though for a much longer duration.

lightning showing up near springfield. So that's interesting I came here to post the same thing. Feisty little system, hopefully it overperforms for someone in the viewing area.

You can't? It's happened in 2022!!!!!!!!!! November to be exact. The forecast was for Flurries or nothing within 6-8 hours of the event. We ended up with 6-8" November 12th 2022. I remember! It was a narrow but extremely intense band. Craziest part was it was near 70 degrees on the 10th. That was awesome. The map is definitely off a bit though. I measured an even 6” at the deer stand in Ste. Gen. Had right at 3” in Perryville.

Well I’m glad I wasn’t looking forward to this one or tracking it for days on end lol. That WWA is going to bust real hard.
Canadian takes the win on this one. It’s had it south/nothing the whole time.

Keep in mind yesterday's marginal risk up in IL and WI produced tons of hail reports and some tornadoes.

PDS tornado warning in Wisconsin currently That’s wild for February I was just coming on here to post that. Tornado emergency for a couple towns there. Looks like rotation is subsiding now. Certainly looks like it did some damage with a CC drop over Albion and strewn downstream.

That's probably what I'm remembering...one summer in the 90s there was a ton of them. I had looked it up a couple of days ago because when the article said the last time was 221 years ago I thought, my memory is better than I thought. I thought it was 1995 but it looks like it was 1998. I was painting my lap siding off of a 30' extension ladder with a paint brush in one hand and a plastic 5 gallon lid in the other taking turns.....paint a swipe with the right hand, swipe a cicada with the left hand..... I can only assume that the article was referring to that exact spot in IL 221 years ago. I guess the overlap of the 2 Brood's in pretty small. I remember using them as fish bait and my dog loved them. I will try them at the pond this year, if it is not ice covered, or dry. Yes it was 1998 for sure. That’s the year I had in mind. It was really something! Being 9 at the time I was pretty fascinated, but I also remember us wishing it would end! I lived out in the country in the woods in a valley, it just echoed through the hills.

Late 90's we had 2 overlapping broods...anyone remember the year? It was absolutely deafening around the clock.

Looking at radar, looks like reurns are down to about 6.5k feet... so that's how much dry air we need to overcome. In other words probably unlikely even for me eh?

Honest, scientific answer is probably the Ozark Plateau. If you look at a historical tornado track map there is always a lull in tracks in central MO. Have to think that’s the influence of the ozark terrain. Part of that is probably lack people around for observation. But, I think it is also very real. We’ve seen many supercells over the years go across the MO and AR Ozark plateau dropping a small tornado here and there, but then when they drop off of it they are finally able To wrap up and sustain. For example the Feb 2017 Perryville tornado and many more outbreaks in eastern Arkansas, SEMO, W. KY, etc. I watched that Perryville supercell have broad and intermittent rotation across the whole state. Once it dropped off of it into Eastern Perry County it went nuts, and quickly. As Chris is well aware of.
