Some of you folks in the northern/western sections of the viewing area have really gotten screwed on rain this summer. We have been lucky down here. I don't have numbers, but there was really only one stretch around late June/early July where things were looking dry. We've continued to have some heavy rains at regular intervals.

Once again the rain disappears before it gets here. There was .05 in the gauge from last night. I sure thought we'd get a lot more than that last night. I'd like to be able to look at the radar from last night (self-flagellation or something). Does anyone have a link that I could use for archived radar? It needs to be really simple. Thanks in advance from the dry plains of St. Peters!

It's getting about that time where we start seeing some preliminary winter outlooks isn't it? Ya know...something for us to coo over now and mock afterwards. Any hype from Bastardi? Perhaps something grammar challenged and abrasive from DT? The always pragmatic Cohen or Dee? What's everyone seeing? Here's the latest from NOAA CPC:

Looking a little down the road...temps look really nice early next week following the rain and storms Sunday night-Monday as the NW flow comes back alive. After that, we get a brief warmup followed by another strong front. This NW flow is really something to keep in mind as we head into fall and winter. Canada already starts to cool down mid to late next week.

smoke is pretty thick over Missouri today.
A pretty eerie glow, looks almost like dawn, even though it's almost 10am.

Here is the 12Z HRRR analysis. It shows the highest densities in western MO, but GOES 16 shows the highest densities further east. Unlike last week HRRR suggests some of these particles may drop to the surface so it wouldn't be surprising if there are reports of a smoke smell the next couple of days.

Haven't heard much about the fires lately..are they still raging out there?

I think a lot of that is coming from wildfires in British Columbia. Apparently they have over 500 active fires.
Also, I just read that a firefighter was killed by the massive (wedge?) firenado in Redding. Was that just released or did I just miss it in the news a while back?

Hope the Colorado rain delivers to northwest Missouri where the drought is bad!

Really neat sunset this evening. Sun is still well above the horizon but has completely disappeared through the haze.

Actually ended up completely losing the sun as it approached the horizon. Impressive amounts of smoke are pulling through. I can't even begin to imagine how bad it is closer to the blazes.

Just dandy...I was thinking about taking a trip in September and driving to Alaska. Now a good portion of British Columbia is on fire and visibilities will be awful. :-(

Somewhat interested in severe chances for tomorrow. If we can get some decent destabilization the solid surface low pushing through northern MO and associated cold front should trigger some storms just west of the Mississippi in the afternoon with 30-40kts of shear to work with. I could see some potential for a few mini low-topped supercells too given that EL is kinda low on forecast soundings. Not too excited about tornado threat though with low level shear being fairly meager, but some hail and damaging winds could certainly be on the table.

Three earthquakes today in that same area of Fiji ranging from 6.3 to 8.2. That's some pretty big shakes. Surprisingly no tsunami warnings

5 tornado warnings now. Kind of odd to see a big low like this in August
