You did great with the forecast, Chris. Your unwavering message is usually ahead of the rest.

When it was all said and done, the models did do a fairly decent job of keeping the storm south of I-70. Even if we didn't get to see the winter weather we may have hoped for in some of our areas of interest, it is somewhat helpful to know that it wasn't a swing and a miss by the models. On to the next weather event.

Chris - great explanation on the DAM on TV today. However, I have some questions about the beast, for anyone really:
1) why does DAM factor into the equation so many times around here?
2) I’d think areas up north would be impacted more, but they seem to be able to get decent snows without having to worry about it.
I understand the science is complicated and geography plays into it. But it sure does seem like we deal with the DAM quite a bit.

PV at the end of the 12Z GFS around the 20th-23rd is definitely something. Not just bitter or frigid, but ungodly, pipebursting cold. One run, almost certainly overdone but good to see my MLK day into Valentine's Day peak/highlight of Winter time frame poking in from time to time in the extended ranges.

In about 2 weeks?

Maybe there is a chance of something in the Day 9-10 timeframe, maybe. Lots of southern energy being thrown around, though the Euro is lacking in the cold air department which is always a concern. Man, I sure miss the big ol' southern lows that would hit us with sleet and snow. Yes I said it, I miss SLEET. Though we did have a good bit of it last Feb I believe on the 10th before the 2 week ice age and big storm set in. Yep it was the 10th. These are always fun to look back on if you have some time to kill: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKgfB42ZFXY

Yeah 15 degrees would be nice, not minus 15. Thats is for sure overdone I wouldn't be so sure. There's some serious cold air sloshing around in the ice box this year...get the right flow orientation across snow cover and look out.

I probably could have measured 0.2 if I had been home... but it was mostly blown away or sublimated by the time I got home.

Driving through Nashville this evening on the way to marathon Florida So far roads to cape have been dry Been some big pile ups in Kentucky today, mainly in norther part of the state, but I would still be sure to watch some type of live traffic monitoring application to stay ahead of any potential parking lot. I personally use Waze when I travel.

Do you take 40 to Asheville and then 26 down to Charleston or do you go through Atlanta? We took the Atlanta route one time, never again. Didn’t help that we hit ATL at 4 pm. Got a nice 3 hour long look at the skyline. For the record, we got exactly 1” today in Perryville.

I was 16 living in South Carolina and I drove to Atlanta to see the 1985 Cardinals play , when I hit the 8 lanes of traffic there is no way to measure the panic that set in lol

Starting around the 15th or so the GEFS and especially EPS look favorable for an active and cold pattern east of the Rockies
Heres to hoping

This chunk of cold air we have tonight means business as well, with no snow on the ground in the metro we are making a strong run towards 0. I think 2 or 3 is the forescast in St.Peters. thats impressive to me coming off of a record warm december and having bare ground.

Gets us to Nashville around midnight, depending on dinner, and Atlanta around 2-3 am, depending on frequency of stops. Helps avoid most of that nonsense. Now…rolling into sunny F L A after driving 17 hours on about 30 minutes of sleep is no bueno, but that’s what poolside naps are for.

The 00z NAM starts the freezing rain/drizzle with temps near 20* Saturday morning
The FRAM chart is spitting out some respectable ice amounts in the northern counties into central IL with amounts near 2/10"
