I wouldn’t be surprised by deaths. They have a HUGE elderly population. Reaction time, decision making can be slowed.
How many, remains to be seen.

The intensity of the drought has eased in some areas, but the expanse has broadened to include 75% of the US and most of the area west of the Mississippi River.

Yeah, I'm getting more and more concerned about the building drought. Rain chances look very minimal to non-existent over the next 10-15 days at least...the Gulf is closed for business and there isn't much energy getting into the lower 48 to make use of any moisture anyway.

Hi everyone, I was able to bring my husband home today after Tuesdays successful surgery. We see his surgeon in a week or two as well as our reg doc and hopefully we’ll hear pathology results by then. Glad we aren’t in Florida! Gosh!

Some of these damage estimates from Ian are shocking. It sounds like $20 billion is the floor and it only goes up from there.

My wife had her 2nd surgery last Thursday to finish getting the 'margins' they were looking for. Just heard today they came back clean. Now just waiting for 9/1 surgery test. We will keep you and your husband and Florida in our prayers.

The footage coming in from the Ft. Myers Beach and Sanibel areas are shocking...some of the worst surge damage I've seen since Ike. Terrible destruction.

One the best before, during, and after surge videos I've seen. I haven't had time to follow all the news, do we know where and what the highest surge was?

That's my guess at least

As a kid, my family vacationed in Fort Myers Beach before it became a tourist hot spot. We went pretty much every spring. It was one of my dad's "happy places." It has been maybe 12 years since I was down there the last time. Still, seeing the pictures of the extreme damage is heartbreaking.
That being said... it was only a matter of time. Much of the damage that you see are homes that were built long before hurricane building codes came to be. I highly doubt anything this bad could result from a similar storm here ever again in the future... because they will rebuild way smarter... higher...greener...stronger.
This is a horribly sad event. But The more these things happen and building codes improve, the lesser the impacts from future similar events will become.

I was thinking about that as I looked at the buildings that did survive with only minor damage as opposed to the ones that were leveled. I figured the ones that largely survived were the ones built since Andrew and Katrina and a few others recent strong storms.

houses shouldn't be allowed to be built that close to the ocean, codes or not.

Models bring the h85 0 line to town next Friday...looking like a downright chilly day with highs in the 50s.
Other than a slight chance of showers on Wednesday, that's about the most noteworthy weather coming up in the foreseeable future.

Other than a slight chance of showers on Wednesday, that's about the most noteworthy weather coming up in the foreseeable future. Dry is a hallmark of La Nina... but a three-peat La Nina is rare. The winters of the 3rd year... from my very limited research... are quite cold. I admit, I did that research late at night and may or may not have done a great job of parsing the data. They also trended somewhat dry.
