Crazy #HurricaneHunt ! Our @usafreserve 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron just landed. We hit hail, massive turbulence in the eye wall that dropped us 1000+ feet and saw #hurricaneIan rapidly intensity. It was NOT even calm inside the eye.

Damn, hail in the eye wall!? Never heard that one before.
Looks like landfall has occurred at Captiva by looking at radar. Timer lost his stream a while back unfortunately.

Looks like on WV loops that the dry air/shear from STJ is being drawn in the southern flank so it 'looks less intense'. I noticed the 12pm update has the same coordinates and wind speed as the 11am update. Is that a coincidence or did they use the 11am data?

years ago I worked with a guy who flew recons into hurricanes back in his day. For some reason, we've had several former military meteorologists come through our team as data modelers. They seem to make great data modelers. At any rate, he could tell countless stories about his experiences. I would imagine he'd say, "meh!" about the 700 vertical jostling. It's been years since he's retired from our firm, so I don't know if he's still around. Dave Malkoff with TWC was on the flight. They lost over 1000 feet with the nose angled 15 deg up. I wonder if there's a virtual reality ride somewhere to "feel the experience". lol

Ian seems different than the classic tropical system I've always understood from a textbook perspective - hail and lightning at the wall, and not even calm inside the eye. I blame covid.

The intense lightning indicates a lot of cloud ice present, so hail production is possible...but I've never heard of that either. Would think the intense winds and warm core structure would hamper hail growth.

I can’t recall a similar situation to what Ian is doing in terms of interaction with the frontal boundary. The satellite presentation is incredible with the plume extending all the way to Greenland.
Hopefully it doesn’t stay over water too long after it crosses FL. Could bring major surge into Charleston SC.

Fortunately, no loss monetarily. Two trips cancelled two years in a row because of Hurricanes.

I'm in an argument with multiple people on the wattsupwiththat.com blog who think Ian is only a tropical storm and that uprooted trees and broken windows will be the extent of the damage. The stupidity of some people almost defies credulity.

I saw similar claims made when Laura made landfall in LA...people were assuming it wasn't bad because there wasn't immediate reports of devastation coming in.

The highest wind gust I've seen over land is 135 mph in Cape Coral, FL. The KPGD station reported 123 mph at 4:10pm before it stopped reporting.

My wife's cousin is hanging in there. They are in Cape Coral, FL.
Their hurricane windows they invested in are holding well. However lots of damage outside and they think something is going on with the roof. Hoping it holds too.
They are worried about flooding though. So far nothing inside.

That rainband on the N flank of the core is unrelenting...looks like 3"/hr stuff and it's slowed to a crawl.

Hopefully it doesn’t stay over water too long after it crosses FL. Could bring major surge into Charleston SC. Good observation. Ian managed to become situated in an ideal location relative to a jet streak just to it's northeast. And remained in the same relative position during the transit from Cuba to Florida (the jet streak progressing with the cyclone). The trough was providing one hell of an outflow channel and you can see that in a water vapor loop where it's not too difficult to track the long journey of ejected parcels all the way to the north central Atlantic. Compared to the short distance from Cuba to Florida that's a lot of mass being vented out of the storm.

That jet streak is the equivalent of putting an expensive exhaust system on a sports car allowing the engine to work more efficiently. The engine in this case would be the convection around the eye wall.

We have to remember to take these reports with a grain of salt until the actual counts are published, but law enforcement is saying fatalities will be in the hundreds.
