The wooly worms I've seen have all lacked the dark color that we equate to cold winters. But we've seen nature signs fail us quite a bit lately. I personally am concerned about the cold, but I haven't looked at anything just yet. Generally I'm on board with a warmer than normal autumn and I'm hypothesizing that the cold will build, then unload in December into January. Think I'll get somebody to check over my wood burning fireplace that I haven't used in 10 years.

The weather must be slow in the area. So how cold is it supposed to be this weekend?

Update on jjf723’s Dexter: He is improving and there is a possibility he may get to go home tonight. Thank you for all of your good wishes and prayers. He still has a long way to go but home is where he needs to be.

Now if the pitching and hitting can just start doing what they're supposed to do by Friday we might have something.

Another light rooftop frost. Bottomed out at 37. Definately a desert like pattern. Chilly mornings warm afternoons.

Models showing a pretty good signal for a cool pattern developing towards mid-month. Seems like high-latitude blocking is going to be favored this cool season, which is supported by warm SST anomalies in the N Pacific and Atlantic regions. That along with the +ENSO probably favors a colder winter for the Midwest...but I'm afraid it may be dry overall.

BRTN, if this lack of rain continues into the fall, won’t it be similar to drought feeds drought and affect our snowfall this winter?

Heck of a storm on Todays 12Z Euro at the end of the run. Nice Mid Latitude Cyclone overhead. Seems like if nothing else the pattern will get a tad more interesting heading into Mid Month. Also if Northwest flow sticks around we could get some clipper action this Winter. So not too worried about the dryness yet, but we may not get those heavy wet snows.

The Winter of 2013-2014 could be a good analog for this Winter especially if the Western Pacific can stay active into November or December. It was drier then normal overall, and much colder. We still had that nice near Blizzard in January, and if there is blocking around we could still get plenty of cold.

BRTN, if this lack of rain continues into the fall, won’t it be similar to drought feeds drought and affect our snowfall this winter? That effect is muted quite a bit during the cool season, but it's definitely a factor. What I'm seeing is a tendency for persistent NW flow to take hold which will keep Gulf moisture at bay overall and limit S stream storm potential. If the blocking sets up right, there could be big storm potential at times...but I think that will heavily favor the E Coast and Ohio Valley...and not this far West.

That could be the first storm of the autumn season...GEM has a big amplification too across the central US around then. Looks like the Gulf may finally open for business with sustained S/SW flow.

Nice weather, but would be nice to have some nighttime rains. Grass is getting crunchy, water bill is getting high. I turned off the water two weeks ago. What happens from here is up to mother nature! But it is definitely getting crunchy. The dry ground will promote even colder night temps going forward, but also iver-performing warmth in daylight.

On my way to a short work trip in Nashville earlier this week, I decided to take a slightly different route that would take me through Mayfield, KY. I hadn't been through there since the tornado, and wanted to pay my respects and see how they were doing with rebuilding. Wow, I almost wish I hadn't.
They are resilient people and are definitely doing lots of rebuilding, but it was haunting seeing the path still so clear, with lots of rubble still being collected and organized 10 months later. The way it cut directly through downtown was just insane. It was sobering for sure.
