The wind has really picked up here in the last 15-30 minutes. Haven't paid attention whether the direction changed

Glenn showed a map of snow accumulation through the middle of next week. From the systems he put the city at 7“. He also showed single digit lows through much of next week.

Central Iowa gets another blizzard warning with the passage of the front tomorrow. Though this time it sounds like it will be more of a ground blizzard blowing the existing snow around.

Will the wind pick up as the low gets closer? Just wondering as we haven’t gotten the forecasted wind yet! Wind has picked up in Barnhart. We've had some pretty good gusts in St. Peters

Everyone take a deep breath and try to temper their excitement. We've had too many disappointments. Let's just dial back the anticipation.

Right on schedule the snow let up just after noon in far NE St. Peters. Getting much brighter here - sun wants to come out but hasn't made an appearance yet.

Soooo I feel pretty good about 1-2" tomorrow. The potential does look to be there for an isolated 3" south of 44 but that probability seems low atm Especially when a few days ago it was supposed to be either a little rain or nothing at all.

Haha, I seriously doubt that there were many people back in 1953 who followed the weather to the same caliber we do. I guess there could of been a couple people. It was hard to find weather data. Anyone know on here how many weather models there were in 1953? I'd be surprised if there were more than 3-5 different models. The first computer generated model was developed in 1950. Amazing what it must be like for somebody born in the 1940s to watch the evolution of technology. Not exactly the same but there were people, especially farmers, who were better at reading the clouds, the winds, the behavior of animals, and other things we don't really look at much now.

Shouldn't be an issue since there's no precip expected today. NWS posted on Facebook that the radar is down for maintenance until 3 pm today.

I hate to even mention this but the ICON has a borderline ice storm/backend snow for Monday, followed by another system. Both much further south than previous runs. Brigette Mahoney mentioned that as a possibility this morning, too. But too soon to tell.

A gang of starlings have moved in on my feeder. They chase away the cardinals, finches chickadees and woodpeckers and generally make a mess of things. 'Bout to take the fight to them! Large groups of starlings usually swoop in for a while and then leave en masse. I am not a starling fan. Starlings can empty a feeder in no time. I'm not a fan, either. Even though I don't do the feeder thing any more.

Lightest of dustings on the deck when I got up this morning. If it's still falling I can't see it.

Brief glimpse of the sun right after sunrise but now back to the gray. Still had a dusting of snow on the deck and grass but it has quickly melted.
Official snow total from yesterday - .4. more than doubled the seasonal total.

Warm enough that the snow falling on my deck, 3 feet off the ground, is just wet. So should not be a problem with raised surfaces at this point.

After the conversation about the “irregularities“ of the biggest snow total I was wondering about the really old temperature records.
Specifically I was thinking about the -22 record low for the city. How accurate was that reading? Obviously it wasn't a digital thermometer so what about it's calibration? The city wouldn't have been the heat island it is now so where was that measurement taken? How rural of a location?
I guess I'm wondering if, by looking at records from the late 19th century, are we comparing apples and oranges when we put them side-by-side with 21th century readings?
