Wilfred has made an appearance in the Eastern Atlantic. That means TD22 in the GOM will likely be named Alpha later today.

Any idea what happens if one of Greek named storms is severe enough that the name gets retired?

Well, Gulf Shores vacation terminated. Prayers for the people affected. Their issues are certainly more important than a cancelled vacation. A very red sunrise this morning.

I know I remember a few commenting on having interests/timeshares in vacation property. This was Signature Properties. Just curious on any inside info on how much damage on properties. I see The Hangout and several souvenir places we recognized were damaged.

Any idea what happens if one of Greek named storms is severe enough that the name gets retired? This was considered back in 2005. There was a proposal to have a list of backup names but the NHC forecasts balked at it because they felt transitioning into the Greek alphabet better highlighted the rarity of using up the standard names. I think I side with the NHC forecasters on this one. I think if a Greek hurricane got retired it would start the debate again. Personally I'd rather them just retire that name and move on to the next letter. Better yet...and it's hard to argue against this...I would like to see them use villain names from the Marvel Universe. Thanos...Loki...etc.

Gfs just spins alpha in place for 2 or 3 straight days on the texas gulf coast.

GFS and GEM give us some rain finally with the remnant of Wilfred as it combines with another approaching front. It won't be until late next week/weekend but its something possible to track if it holds.

12Z GFS would of been a beaut had it been just 2 months or so from now. Deformation rain just sits on us for like a whole day with the Wilfred/frontal system/Low mix the weekend after next or Days 8-10.

Yes i missed alpha way off in the eastern atlantic. Also seems like wilfred will weaken and the moisture we get next week seems to be from the remnants of beta.

I'd totally trade a 6" snowstorm for a category 5 Hurricane Omicron.

TD22 is officially named...Beta.
There was a chance it would have been named Wilfred if this morning's recon mission had not been aborted.

So if I'm understanding correctly, then I think Tropical Storm Alpha is now the eastern-most forming cyclone designated by NHC.

I read that they would retire the name with the year on it. So if Beta destroys Houston, it would be retired as Beta 2020 but be used again in different years if needed.

This storm sitting off the coast of Texas is extremely unlikely to become a violent hurricane, but some of the gfs runs show absolutely catastrophic flooding from Texas to Louisiana
