West Belleville Report 0749 6.96 inches of rain. 573 lightning strikes detected.
These are some of the most intense weather events. It's incredible how much has to come together to make something like this happen.

Why does this seem to always happen at night? The low level jet, at about 1500m altitude, strengthens at night when the surface cools and the drag associated with near surface convection/thermals subsides. This jet can carry copious amounts of moisture and lift that just keep feeding into a low level boundary. This is why heavy rain often happens at night.

The airport has 8.43" in 8 hours.
The 6-hr threshold for a 1-in-1000 year event is 7.80"
The 12-hr threshold for a 1-in-1000 year event is 9.50".

Sitting at just under an inch in Arnold this morning.
Going from a drought straight into historic flooding is a very St. Louis thing.

I've thought for a long time now that those recurrence intervals from the Hydrological Design Studies Center need to be reevaluated. We've had two 1-200 year and now a 1-1000 year events all within the last 5 years.

I suspect my gauge tipped at around 6" last night (it is not a sturdy mount), when I picked it up it still had 4.5" in it. So all I know is that I had greater than 4.5" by about 6am. I'm in eastern St. Pete.

Wife can't get to work. Too many low lying intersections and bridges over creeks. She's hoping the water drops in a couple of hours.

I've thought for a long time now that those recurrence intervals from the Hydrological Design Studies Center need to be reevaluated. We've had two 1-200 year and now a 1-1000 year events all within the last 5 years. FEMA is trying to get away from that terminology altogether as that is never what it really meant. 1-200 is being called an event that has a 0.5% chance of happening in any 12-month period, which is a better representation of the statistical analysis behind it.

4.46" According to the Davis, in Mascoutah We are at 6.02". Strange how a mile, at most, makes that much of a difference.

Wife can't get to work. Too many low lying intersections and bridges over creeks. She's hoping the water drops in a couple of hours. Took me 2:40 to get to work. Normally a little over an hour. Finally got diverted off WB70 and had to come in the back way.

This is the most impressive rainfall event we've seen since 2015...unreal training! Have yet to check the gauge but I'm guessing it's at least 3-4".

I'm told at home since I left 3 hours ago just over 2.65".
So that's 8.75" roughly total.
Will never see this again in my lifetime in Belleville.
Thank God 🙏 most of Belleville is not susceptible to flash floods

The NBM is highlighting the area just south of where the worst rainfall occurred this morning for rainfall tonight. There is some overlap there, especially on the IL side. Don't take the amounts it's showing literally, it's more for placement purposes.

Can anyone explain why the KSTL daily precipitation via the link below doesn't reflect the 1915 daily record of 6.85"? www.weather.gov/lsx/monthTab

As of 9:40 STL has had 10.85" for July. I believe this is the 2nd wettest July on record behind 1948 of 12.65".
