I never 'heard' any rain last night but a great long lasting light show. Just checked rain gauge and there is an additional 2.75" added to yesterday's afternoon deluge of 1". 3.75" total for the last 14 hours. Maybe my hearing is failing.

I don’t know how much I got, but at 11:40 last night mid-thunderstorm, I had to go out and backwash the pool to keep it from over-flowing. Then I woke up at 6:20 to the sound of more rain and the need to backwash the pool to prevent overflowing with the backbuilding / training line of heavy rain overhead. Crazy amount of water in a matter of 10 hours.

What's up with the heavy rain looking like a lake effect band between 170/270.
Is that an artifact or has it really been non stop training moderate to heavy rain there

The rain should definitely do some damage to the drought even for the southerners.

Guess things really got going down south last evening...I fell asleep early during the rain and woke up to .75" in the gauge but I see most areas got a couple inches or more.

I'm glad that isn't a snow fall map.
I was really worried metrolink would have more problems.
They are like Ameren before July 2006 and Dec 1st 2006.
Wholly unprepared for big weather issues

Since the rain is past us I thought I'd post an update on the Tonga eruption. According to Vergoz et al. 2022 it is now believed the volcano detonated with a force equal to a 100-200 MT nuclear bomb. How will this effect our weather? This is where things get interesting. Typically massive eruptions cool the planet due to substantial SO2 and other aerosol precursors that are lifted into the stratosphere lasting about 2 years. But this eruption is totally different and unique in ways that no one ever imagined and are only now becoming more clear. Most of the SO2 and other aerosols precursors that would typically cool the planet were absorbed by the ocean. That leaves only water as the significant substance that got lofted into the stratosphere. And boy did it inject a lot of it into the stratosphere. According to Millan et al. 2022 the amount of water vapor in the stratosphere increased by an unprecedented and astonishing 10% overnight. And because there is little mixing between the stratosphere and troposphere it could stay there for up to 10 years. H2O is an incredibly potent greenhouse gas. It is expected that Tonga, in a never before hypothesized circumstance, may cause the planet to warm instead of cool. In fact, it looks like we're already seeing hints that the stratosphere is beginning to cool while the troposphere warms...a telltale sign that a new thermal barrier has been introduced around the tropopause. Other possible effects include the poleward shift of the subtropical jet and a possible link with Sudden Stratospheric Warming events though I haven't been able to figure out if it will enhance or suppress the possibility of a winter time SSW event. But the question on everyone's mind right now would be...will it increase or decrease our chance of snow this winter? I really don't know. A 10% increase in stratospheric water vapor is massive and will almost certainly have some effect. I just don't know by how much and in which specific way. Either way large planetary events like these only enhance or suppress weather events by a few percentage points at most. So it's not like we should expect a dramatically different winter or something on par with the year without a summer or the snowy 1970's. Side note...one of the most common ways water vapor gets into the stratosphere is via the overshooting tops of strong thunderstorms like what we often experience during the severe thunderstorm season in the United States.

I am starting to wonder if a heat advisory will be needed again this weekend, dew points are going to be off the charts with the wet ground even 90 degrees will push heat index at or above 105 in spots tomorrow through sunday in my opinion.

Will be similar to what we saw this week...I recorded 3 consecutive days with dewpoints at/above 80*. There's a lot of water in the ground to be evaporated and transpired...

Storms starting to fire. Hrrr all over placement here. Didn't expect much development today but the HRRR has proved me wrong yet again, lol I guess there's weak lift occurring from the developing mid-level low to the S/SE. Pretty nebulous forcing, but it's doing work.

Sun came out for a bit and now it's straight up pea soup out at 85/77*...getting tired of the extreme humidity. Looks like we'll get a break early next week though.

May be looking at yet another heavy rainfall setup early next week with models showing a stalled/wavy boundary near the area and shortwaves rippling along it.

May be looking at yet another heavy rainfall setup early next week with models showing a stalled/wavy boundary near the area and shortwaves rippling along it. What are the odds that this pattern remains in winter and we are able to say... "Maybe looking at yet another heavy SNOWFALL setup early next week with models showing us stalled wavy boundary near the area and short waves Rippling along it." 🤔🤔🤔🤔

After looking at the radar I said to myself "that cell is pretty close." Just heard thunder 7 miles west of De Soto.

I see when I lost internet my other post didn't post. the clouds to me look like they were going due north which was odd seeing what the radar was looking like but I see it now, the Northern end of that complex grew further north. It has been pouring here for the last 10-15 minutes lots of thunder and lightning.👍👍 Gorgeous outside sitting on the front porch. Except for the evidence of the kitty cats starting to use the front garden plot as a litter box.🤬🤬🤬🤬
